Overview of case study:
In case study 2, we created our final product and linked it to what we had learnt about in RE for Diwali. We designed and created a sand candle using bright colours and patterns from previous products that we had researched. This was to represent the light from Diwali and the bright colours and patterns from Rangoli patterns. We then wrote instructions on how we made our product so that other people could make their own sand candles.
The Learning Targets for this Case Study were:
design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria
generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and, where appropriate, information and communication technology
select from and use a wide range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their characteristics
explore and evaluate a range of existing products
evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria
Week 4
This week across KS1 we have been colouring the sand that we will use in our sand candles. We experimented with food colouring but found that powder paint gave us the best, brightly coloured sand.
We mixed powder paint with sand.
We added a little bit of sand at a time to get the colours just right.
We loved watching as the colours swirled together.
In Crew One we began to think about how we are going to make the candle for our final product. We looked at each step carefully and thought about what we would need to do! We can't wait to start making our candles next week!
Week 5:
This week, we got to make our candles! We started by mixing the powder paint with the sand to create the colours on our design sheets, and then we used our designs to create the patterns we chose with the sand. We had to be very careful pouring the sand into the glass jars so that we didn't mix our layers.
We followed our designs...
Got messy hands...
And produced beautiful final products!
We were really proud of ourselves!
Week 6:
We used praise, notice and wonder to evaluate our own products this week using our design criteria. Once we were confident at evaluating our own products, we looked at each others and critiqued them.
Praises:
Lylah: "I really like Kairen's repeating patterns and how he has followed his design."
Scarlett: "I like the bright colour Mariama has used."
Tiarna: "I praise Mason's repeating patterns and his colours."
In Year 1, we have been working really hard to be kind in our crews so that we can share our praises about each other's work.
