Students in the upper school of Caravel Academy are required to perform 80 hours of school or community service during the four years of high school. Students must earn a minimum of 20 hours per year until they have met the requirement, and they may carry over extra hours from one year to the next. The service requirement for students who enroll in Caravel after their freshman year will be prorated to 20 hours a year. Students must complete their 20 hours each year by May 15th. Parents of students who do not complete service hours or present documentation by this date will receive written notice that the student must complete the service requirement by the end of the school year in order to receive a report card. Students may not get service hour credit for meeting the service requirements of certain student activities.
All students, especially seniors, must submit verification to Caravel Academy that they have completed their service hours. Documentation must be on the letterhead of the organization for which the student worked and should include days and hours worked, as well as the signature of a person who supervised the service.
Suggestions for service activities are listed below. Students may choose to work the full 20 hours for one organization or any combination thereof. Students must receive prior approval from the Administration in order to have hours of service count toward the requirement if the service is not directly associated with one of the activities listed below.
