Mr. Culbert coordinates Canyon High School's iConnect program, and teaches OnRamps Computer Science 303303E, and Honors Computer Science 1 (HCS1). He is a certified Microsoft Office Specialist - Expert, holding the following certifications: Access Expert, Excel Expert, Word Associate, Excel Associate, and PowerPoint Associate. He has held a Level 1 Google Certified Educator certification and is an ExpertRating Certified Professional in HTML 4.01.
A native of the Texas Panhandle and the son of teachers with a combined 74 years of classroom experience, he graduated cum laude from West Texas A&M University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and holds lifetime teaching certificates in Secondary Computer Information Systems, Secondary Information Processing Technologies, and Secondary Biology.
He completed his student teaching at Canyon High in the spring of 1996. After teaching for one year at Highland Park ISD in Amarillo, he returned to CHS to join the Business & Computer Education department in the fall of 1997. He currently serves as the department chairperson and is a member of the Campus Leadership Team (CLT).
He serves as the CHS Key Club co-advisor, helping coordinate community service projects like school blood drives, dinners for residents of the Ronald McDonald House of Amarillo, working at Fill With Hope, and running CHS's paper recycling program. He currently coaches Canyon High's UIL Computer Science, and has coached the Computer Applications and Current Issues & Events teams. He serves as the CHS communication coordinator and is responsible for updating the common areas of the CHS website, posting daily announcements to CHS's ParentSquare feed and CHS's X feed (@canyon_hs).
Mr. Culbert was named the CHS Teacher of the Year in 2020 and 2013. Both years he was also a finalist for CISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. He was also named CHS's Teacher of the Month in January 2020, the Education Credit Union's Teacher of the Month in October 2014, and Shuman Insurance Agency's Teacher of the Month in 2009. He was also named the 2011 High School Blood Drive Coordinator of the Year by the Coffee Memorial Blood Center of Amarillo. He served six years as president of the CHS Choir Booster Club Board.
He and his wife have two children. His daughter and son-in-law are graduates of West Texas A&M University and his son is a junior at Lubbock Christian University. He serves as a deacon at his church and enjoys working in his yard, travel, photography, and reading. A self-described nerd, he owns a comic book collection which he began as a third-grader in Texline when his aunt gave him Batman #332 as a Christmas gift.
