Mr. Culbert has coached three UIL academic contests, Computer Applications, Computer Science and Current Issues & Events.
The Computer Applications contest focuses on use of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, especially Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel. It is a production contest where contestants produce two (sometimes three) files to demonstrate their knowledge of the software.
The Computer Science contest allows students to demonstrate their knowledge of the Java programming language. This contest contests of two portions: the written portion is completed by each individual and the hands-on programming portion is completed by teams of 3-4 programmers from each school.
Canyon HS consistently has students advance beyond the district level in these contests! The following students have placed in district, regional, and state competition since Mr. Culbert began sponsoring these contests in 2000.Â
