No doubt that we are all feeling the effects of being isolated. It’s definately transforming how we think, work and engage with those around us. Many commentators are saying that some of these changes will remain with us, long after the current pandemic has passed.
Whilst there has been significant anguish around the world with the devastating impact of the virus, there are some positive elements to our current way of living.
Work-life balance improves.
The pace of life has slowed.
There is more time for family.
More time for board games, going for walks, reading a book.
There is time for reflection and meditation.
For many, there is more time for prayer and embracing God and His son, Jesus.
For some, there might be contemplation about God and His purpose for this earth.
We wonder what might happen when isolation restrictions are not just eased…..but stopped. Will the pace of life return to what it was or will we remember some of the positive changes that became part of our world.
Without conscious effort, mankind has a propensity to return to old patterns of behaviour. This has been well documented and we can see it through many elements of society. There are also accounts in the Bible that show people readily forget transformational events/ occurrences. In these accounts, and as you read them with objective hindsight, it seems crazy that lives profoundly touched returned to old ways, ways that were familiar.
We know that we also have the ability to adapt, create and mores in the modern era, embrace new technologies, new methods and information to make decisions. Yet…..a big challenge is an individuals focus on self. This can be destructive on the person, or their families or those around them.
This is nothing new.
Our isolation life has been a disruptive change. And with it, we have adapted to a generally more calmer and family focussed community. There are some itchy-feet with a need to see broader family, friends and re-engage in many activities that we loved doing We now talk about what life will be like post-iso.
A disruptive change was also experienced over 2000 years ago when Jesus Christ walked the earth. He presented a new way of life that if embraced resulted in a heightened sense of purpose, a greater understanding of why we are on this earth and an opportunity to participate in a promise for the future.
We can learn from the past to understand how not to repeat mistakes.
We can learn from the past to determine how to place greater emphasis on things that matter.
We can learn from the world around us that we need a relationship with God & His son, Jesus.
The opportunity to embrace a life in Jesus is there for all of us today. It’s an opportunity for reconciliation to God. It’s an opportunity for a new beginning.
Following Jesus requires conscious effort and a great support network.
