“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21v25-28)
The purpose of this short piece is not to approach with a scientific baseline. It is openly subjective and draws on observations that is based on the primary question: why has COVID19 created worldwide hysteria like never before seen on this earth?
Many have said that the world has not faced a pandemic crisis like this since the Spanish Flu. What makes COVID19 so different?
Our globalization of business and cross border travel has meant that the virus can travel readily
100 years ago, our economies were largely built on domestic trade with limited international trade, today that is completely different (Australia is reliant on international trade like never before)
Social media has enabled information sharing so rapidly that we have information, images and insights into the effect this virus has. In fact, we can see what might happen to our country (or other countries) if tight measures are not put in place
COVID19 is impacting everyone….. how we function as a society, our health, our mental well being, the economy, jobs, everyone (both here and around the world).
We can then understand why COVID19 has created such global attention. Yet, we need to find a way to calm the fear, to find time to reflect and for many to find time to think about answers to life.
You may have grown up learning about the Bible, or perhaps you’ve never learned about it…. The Bible is a book containing information that God wants us to know. He wants us to know key information relating to our purpose on this earth and His purpose for the future.
There is no doubt that the world has serious challenges. We, the human race, have created a number of problems that might affect the longevity of this planet (i.e. climate change). We also have diseases that have entered into our society and these can set us on a completely new course for new social norms. Man too has created some amazing things (i.e. medicines and the ability to find solutions to disease). Yet, our world - on the whole - is in turmoil.
The Bible talks about events like this changing the world. God could see that man over thousands of years made choices that ultimately set us on a path for self destruction.
If God foresee’s such events, why doesn’t He intervene? Quite simply, God has given mankind free will to determine ones own actions. He has also given us a solution for our lives today and for the future. That solution is in a man called Jesus Christ, God’s son.
He will at an appointed time bring peace on earth and that is where we rest our hope.
The current events will continue to run their course and we pray for strength at that many will find answers in amongst the chaos. At the same time, we know that there will come a time when God, through His son Jesus Christ, will provide peace.
