Stilts, Spinning

Carousel Rules

Only horses may be running
in this circle, oh-so-stunning
Organ music lights the breeze
'Round the crown-shaped canopy

All not given, we will take
on this spinning birthday cake
Horses broken not replaced
Unlike repairs done to your face

These are the codes, mistress
These are the tools
Heed the pipes
warning of carousel rules

Character

Who is Hazel (the miller's daughter) at the moment she is most vulnerable?

Marrying the king is not a 'win' for Hazel. She just wants to stay alive. She wants to be happy and take control of her life. Everyone who has ever felt oppressed by societal norms can relate to this scene. It is not that she is weak; she is brave enough not to run away. She doesn't jump out the window or harm herself to give a reason for not finishing the job. Anyone who has ever been overtaxed financially can relate to the overwhelm felt by the character at this moment.
