The IB Visual Arts course is a rigorous course that can be undertaken at Higher (HL) or Standard (SL) level. Students must meet the requirements of three areas of study that include a curated Exhibition of 4-7 resolved studio worlds for SL students, 8-11 resolved studio artworks HL students. The Process Portfolio is a digital document in which the students document their thought processes, research, ideas and development as artists. The Comparative Study is the written component in which students analyze, contrast and compare at least three artworks from at least two different artists from at least two differing cultures. The Investigation Workbook is the first hand tool in which students develop their unique visual language, their art making practice, research, ideation process, media investigation, and reflection in their own artistic growth.
This course can be taken at Higher (HL) or Standard level (SL) and involves an examination of theatre in its diversity of forms around the world. Students will come to understand that the act of imagining, creating, presenting and critically reflecting on theatre is an embodiment of the human need to investigate and find explanations for the world around us. The course involves the development of performance skills through working on devised and scripted scenes, some of which will be presented to an audience. Students will also study drama from the point of view of the director and will investigate methods of turning a play script into performance. A major theatre production, where students collaboratively bring to life a broad spectrum of talents and skills in the principles and practice of theatre, is the highpoint of each year.
This DP Music course is designed to engage students in a journey of imagination and discovery through different areas of inquiry (music for sociocultural and political expression, music for listening and performance, music for dramatic impact and film, and music technology in the digital age) by working in roles as a researcher, creator and performer. Through the lens of these roles, students will complete three components through exploring, experimenting and presenting music. The difference between SL and HL students is that HL students will complete an additional assessment called the contemporary music maker, which is based on real-life practices of music-making, experiences as developing musicians in this course, and their collaboration with others.
IB Film is an intensive course that conducts an extended examination of film as a modern and innovative form of art. Students will be challenged to view and analyze films by auteurs from historical, theoretical, and stylistic perspectives, providing students with necessary terminology to analyze film’s representational strategies. Films treated will cover a diverse range extending across films from different time periods, genres, movements, and nationalities. Furthermore, the course will give a practical introduction to filmmaking, providing opportunities for students to learn and refine their skills including scriptwriting, cinematography, lighting, sound, and editing, culminating in a production portfolio that demonstrates an understanding of the filmic text. The first year will primarily focus on the basics of film analysis and production, investigating approaches to Hollywood films of the studio era. The second year will consist of looking at films from different countries as an alternative to Hollywood practice, including works from Germany, Italy, Russia, France, Hong Kong and Japan.
