This course is only available as an SL course and is intended for those students who are new to a language or who have very minimal exposure to the language. Students learn to communicate in everyday situations. This is an introductory course for students interested in learning about the Japanese language and culture. The course will focus on key skills of language: reading, writing, listening, speaking, through the study of language, themes and texts. In doing so, students also develop conceptual understandings of how language works, as appropriate to the level of the course. At the end of the course, students will be able to communicate in familiar and some unfamiliar contexts.
Language B is a language acquisition course designed for students with some previous experience of the target language. In the language B SL course, students further develop their ability to communicate in the target language through the study of language, themes and texts. In doing so, they also develop conceptual understandings of how language works, as appropriate to the level of the course. Students learn to communicate in the target language in familiar and unfamiliar contexts. They describe situations, narrate events, make comparisons, explain problems, and state and support their personal opinions on a variety of topics relating to course content.
At HL, students are expected to extend the range and complexity of the language they use and understand in order to communicate. They continue to develop their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, as well as their conceptual understanding of how language works, in order to construct, analyse and evaluate arguments on a variety of topics relating to course content and the target language culture(s). HL students also begin to study literary texts.
