Internships at Onas provide unique career development experiences for young people across a range of interests and industries. Onas interns– most of whom are former counselors now exploring professional paths– can develop new skills while continuing to make Onas a better organization. Camp Onas works with each prospective intern to determine responsibilities, projects, compensation, and professional development opportunities that meet shared needs.
This winter and spring, Tyler returned to Camp Onas as our digital marketing intern. Tyler’s main project was creating a Google Ads campaign to help new families discover Camp Onas for their child. He also lived on-site and pitched in with maintenance and our year round programs. Born and raised in Doylestown, Tyler was a camper at Onas and has worked at Camp since 2014.
I started coming to Camp at the age of eight, and enjoyed seven summers as a camper! I was then fortunate enough to work on staff for eight summers starting in the role of a Camp Aid doing kitchen work, then progressed to a Counselor in Training, Junior Counselor, Senior Counselor, Senior Staff, and Director of Maintenance. I also loved leading canoeing voyagers!
I was a Marketing Intern throughout the winter and spring this year. The opportunity was extremely exciting to me. It offered a chance to learn how to create an ad campaign, and to try and help get kids to experience a place that truly was a second home to myself growing up. Drafting the copy and other components of the ads themselves, doing keyword research, and testing different ad schedules were some of the early experiences I enjoyed in this process. Knowing the best performing keywords, ad times, paired with relevant copy, helped get results to see what works and what did not. From here I would run the most effective ad, during the times/days which get the best interactions. Another part I enjoyed was being able to get insight and advice from multiple experienced year-round staff members. This was extremely helpful for me to get a better understanding of Camp’s needs, and improve my own work!
Camp in the off season is gorgeous. My girlfriend and I really appreciated being surrounded by all this nature. The wildlife gets more active with less humans around so you end up getting a lot of cool and somewhat close experiences with animals. In just the last 2 months of my internship, I saw turkeys, deer, foxes, possums, ducks, and herons in the pond/upper fields areas alone. I also sledded down Dining Hall Hill this winter with Dex. Made it all the way down past the tire swing!
I graduated in 2023 from Pennsylvania College of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in industrial design. My industrial design studies focused on learning how to produce medical and consumer products. I learned both traditional ideation and drafting processes as well as computer aided drafting softwares which helped me create digital forms of a design idea. Penn Tech has a fantastic makerspace with a variety of shop tools I truly enjoyed learning how to use to create passion projects. This includes CNC Mills, lathes, 3-D Printers, wood cutting lasers, planners, saws, sanders, and more! I also earned a minor in marketing with specific interests in consumer behavior studies. This interest led me to further obtain a minor in digital marketing as well.
I am glad to be using my background in design this summer as I am working as a part of a landscape design team in Nantucket, MA. I am also looking to experience more work in the consumer behavior, product management, and display areas of marketing. Working with a team of people with similar motivations to myself will always be important to me and was always a reason I came back to Camp. Camp’s staff really cares about the people they’re interacting with, which creates a contagious culture of people encouraging themselves and others to put passion into their work.
Thank you Tyler, for all your hardwork this winter/spring!
