Internships at Onas provide unique professional development experiences for young people across a range of interests and fields. Onas interns – most of whom are former counselors now exploring the possibilities of their future – can develop new skills and continue discovering the paths ahead, while making Onas a better place in the process. Camp Onas works with each prospective intern to determine interests, responsibilities, projects, compensation, and learning opportunities that meet shared needs.
What’s your Camp story?
I first heard about Camp Onas when I was 7 years old. Sue Gould came to my elementary school, United Friends School, to speak about Onas. I remember feeling instantly excited about the thought of going to Camp and telling my mom that I HAD to go, so the next summer she signed me up.
I continued attending Onas as a camper for 6 summers until I graduated in 2015. I returned as a Camp Aid in 2017 and have been on staff for the past 7 summers (if we include 2020). I’ve held various positions at Camp Onas while on staff, including Co-Director of Indoor Maintenance for three summers, Co-Head of the Gold Side in 2023, and, this summer, I am the Advancement and Engagement Intern.
What was your internship at Camp this summer?
This summer I am working with the Advancement and Engagement team. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the back-end communication processes of nonprofits, like Camp Onas, especially the outreach that goes into planning things like Community Meeting for Worship and the content creation for Camp’s social media.
I was excited about working with Camp in this way because I wanted to learn more about how nonprofits operate on the business side of things and how they engage with their different publics. I’ve only ever seen Camp operate staff-to-campers so I was interested in seeing a completely new side of communication.
During the summer, I worked on different projects like content creation for social media, articles and activities for the newsletters, taking and selecting photos for future marketing and fundraising use, and event planning and execution. Through all of these projects I have learned the importance of committing to and prioritizing the right balance of work, and that communicating with the team you are working with is essential to the success of any project.
What did you study in college?
I completed my BA in Political Science this past May of 2024 at Quinnipiac University, and will be Returning for a 5th year to complete my MS in Public Relations.
What are your career goals?
I’ve changed my mind a lot over the years about what I want to do for a career, but recently I have been excited by the thought of working with nonprofits in a public relations/engagement capacity. This internship with Camp Onas has helped to show me what I have an interest in doing, and I would like to continue my career in the nonprofit sector doing communications work.
Anything else you’d like to add?
A fun part of this summer was finding out that my very first counselor at Camp was Isabelle H., who along with Katie R., was one of my supervisors for this internship! The life cycle of Onas is something that will always make me smile because it truly is a place that leaves such a lasting impact. Camper and staff alumni will come back for Community Meeting for Worship and get to reconnect with the place and people they haven’t seen for years. That’s what makes camp such a special place.
