Course Syllabus: Welcome to 11^th Grade American Literature and Composition

Course Objective:

Students will develop an understanding of American “thought and discourse” (xiii) and improve critical reading, thinking, writing, listening, and speaking skills necessary for college and career.

We will study non-fiction (essays, speeches, editorials) and fiction (novels, stories, drama, films), poetry (& song lyrics)

Texts: Springboard English Language Arts, supplementary texts

Required Resources: 3-ring binder, lined notebook, pen, pencil, eraser

Computer Use: We will be using computers a lot during class.

Course Assessment (How your grade is calculated):

Homework, classwork, quizzes, tests, essays and creative writing will be graded and recorded

in the following categories:

Listening/Speaking 15%

Reading 30%

Writing/Language 35%

EOC* 20%

*The EOC is a 3-day online exam. However, there are 3 weeks of class after the EOC with instruction and graded assignments.

Cobb County School District Grading:

Student performance are recorded on the permanent record using numerical grades.

A - 90-100 % - superior achievement

B - 80-89 % - above average achievement

C - 74-79 % - average achievement

D - 70-73 % - minimum achievement

F - below 70 - failure to achieve.

Late Grades and Make-Up Policy:

Late assignments receive a 10% deduction per day. If there is a good reason why you can’t complete an assignment on time, discuss it with the teacher before the due date. Ask the teacher when to make up missed quizzes, tests, or in-class work for excused absences. Work that isn’t turned in receives 0.

Academic Honesty:

Cheating is not tolerated. You will receive a zero and a phone call home. Cheating =

• using the internet or phone or copying from another student
• copying sentences from published writing (internet/book/newspaper/magazine) into your own writing without quoting and citing the origin correctly. This is called plagiarism.

How to Achieve a Good Grade:

• Have the determination to learn as much as you can, to think, and to become a good reader, and writer.
• Be in class everyday (unless you’re sick), on time. If you have to miss class, know what work you missed. It’s your responsibility to check the blog, ask for handouts, get copies of notes, turn work in, arrange to take quizzes/tests.
• Be fully present, actively listening, and participating in discussions and activities.
• Take organized notes. Keep all handouts in your binder.
• Work effectively in class. Don’t waste time or procrastinate, so you won’t have much homework. However, there will be some homework. As Nike says, “Just Do It!”
• Do your best on assignments and turn them in on time.
• Ask questions; make sure you understand. Ask for help
• Review notes and study for quizzes and tests
• Don’t use your phone in class unless the teacher gives permission for a learning activity. Do not require the teacher to tell you to put your phone away.
