Summer Reading

The 2020 Summer Reading Program to earn exam exemptions is Back!

We are still waiting on a book order. Once all of the books are in, I will post a request form and a date that the book(s) can be picked up. You can also access some of the titles digitally by going to or downloading the Android or Apple app and logging in with your student ID # and lunch code + ccs (1234ccs). Another option is to get the books through the Campbell County Public Library. Beginning May 18, all branches will be offering curbside pickup.

Email Mrs. Bernzott with any questions.

The books and descriptions are listed below. All book club sponsors have a Schoology Code that will allow you to join their book club. You may choose any book in which you are interested. Sign up, read, and discuss according to the teacher's directions. Once the discussion is finished and you have met all of the requirements set forth by the teacher, he or she will submit your name for a midterm exam exemption.

*Only one exam exemption may be earned, although you are welcome to read and participate in multiple book clubs.

Questions? Clicking on the teacher's name will take you directly to their email.

Cracking the Bell / Geoff Herbach / Katherine Tegen Books, 2019.

But when Isaiah gets knocked out cold on the field, he learns there’s a lot more to lose than football. All his friends are on the team, and Isaiah knows they can’t win without him. The scholarship offer from Cornell is only on the table if he keeps playing. Without football, what would keep his family together and what would prevent him from sliding back into the habits that nearly destroyed him? Isaiah must decide how much he’s willing to sacrifice for the sport that gave him everything, even if playing football threatens to destroy his future.

They Called Us Enemy / George Takei / Top Shelf Productions, 2019.

In 1942, at the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, every person of Japanese descent on the west coast was rounded up and shipped to one of ten "relocation centers," hundreds or thousands of miles from home, where they would be held for years under armed guard. They Called Us Enemy is Takei's firsthand account of those years behind barbed wire, the joys and terrors of growing up under legalized racism, his mother's hard choices, his father's faith in democracy, and the way those experiences planted the seeds for his astonishing future. What does it mean to be American? Who gets to decide? When the world is against you, what can one person do?
