Below is an overview of how a student's grade is calculated.
There are two types of assessments in class:
Chapter Tests/Quizzes (100 points each)
After every chapter there will be an assessment (test, quiz, call it whatever causes the least amount of stress). If there is more than section in the chapter, then there will be more than one assessment, but typically, it is one per chapter.
Learning Logs (50 points each)
After the completion of every chapter there will be a learning log. This is a written outline summarizing what they have learned in the chapter section. Students may use their notes, core problems, textbook, and each other to complete this assessment. It is given before the test as a way to review / study for the upcoming test. If there is more than one section in the chapter, then there will be more than one learning log, but typically, it is one per chapter.
Projects (25 - 50 points each)
At the end of some chapters, students may be assigned a project to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts covered. Each project will be graded using a rubric, with approximately 10% of the grade based on neatness and use of color.
If students gets a grade on an assessment that they are not happy with, they have the opportunity to retake that assessment.
Chapter Tests/Quizzes - See the reference section in the google classroom for more details on the process.
Learning Logs - Students will complete a new learning log. Then they will write corrections on the top and turn it in.
Most of the assignments that you will see in classwork are as follows:
Do Nows (these are the daily warm up) This is the only thing in their grade that can not be corrected if they got a bad grade on.
Binder Checks (these are how they get credit and I check their core problems)
Closure Problems (these are at the end of each chapter as a review for the test)
Projects & Presentations (whenever they fit into the learning)
Binder checks, closure problems, & projects can all be corrected if students do not like the graded they got.
This is where you will see the daily/nightly work:
Homework will be given 3 nights a week
More details about homework are in the reference section on the google classroom
Students have 2 weeks from the date the assignment was due to do corrections for a higher score. More details about how to complete homework corrections are in the reference section in their google classroom. Assignments then get turned in, I will grade then, and scores will be adjusted and reflected in powerschool.
Students will have numerous opportunities throughout each quarter to earn extra credit to help improve their grade. Every homework assignment has 1 point of extra credit built into it. Generally, every other test/quiz will have 1 question on it, which will be worth 10% of extra credit. Lastly, there may be 1 – 2 assignments given each quarter that will be for extra credit. I do not give extra credit at the end of the quarter.
If students do not complete a homework assignment the day it is due, they have up to 1 week from the date it was assigned to do it and earn credit for it. Students are to complete the assignment, come in on their own time to grade it, and show me the score before credit is given.
I update grades in Power School every weekend. If a student is absent or has done corrections on something and I get that score on a Monday, understand that you will not see it reflected in Power School until that weekend. You are more than welcome to follow up with an email, but please just have patience. If it has been more than a week, please do not hesitate to bring it to my attentions with my apologies.
