We read The Water Princess by Susan Verde and then designed, built, and tested water filters. Our water filters did not work very well but I think we developed empathy for children who face the challenge of not having clean drinking water every day.

On the first day in Computer Science and STEM class, the 5th graders competed in the paper chain challenge. Pairs had to make the longest paper chain they could with only two sheets of paper, twelve inches of tape, and one pair of scissors.

The 5th graders were challenged to build a ball run for a ping pong ball using only paper, and tape. We used the following formula to determine the winners of our contest.
final score = (4x time in seconds for the ball to go through the run) - number of sheets of paper used
