Stations engage students in different interactive learning environments. This allows students to take the leadership role in the areas where the teacher is not present. By having students work in small groups and focus on a specific skill or topic, the teacher can provide scaffolds that support each students' specific needs, interests, and learning styles that would aid in their engagement.
A common characteristics among LTELs is non-participation or non-engagement. Stations allow students to stay engaged by providing opportunities for speaking in a small group setting, active listening, and academic dialogues on a range of high-interest, complex topics/skills. If the teacher builds a culture of student engagement and makes the station activities interesting and talk-worthy, students will want to participate.
ELD.PI.1 Exchanging information and ideas with others through oral collaborative discussions on a range of social and academic topics
ELD.PI.4 Adapting langauge choices to various contexts (based on task, purpose, audience, and text type)
SL.1 Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively
Use Content Standards for the conversation.
For Example, if you are discussing how rocks are formed, you would use the following NGSS standard:
Middle School. Earth and Space Science 2. Sub-item 1. Earth’s Systems. Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process.
Choosing Stations: An essential element is choosing what will be at each station. Ensure that each station is related to class concepts.
Model: Model what students should be doing at each station.
Expectations: Provide clear expectations and outcomes (both visually and orally) at each station so students are aware of what is expected of them.
Accountability: At the end of each station, have students complete some type of exit ticket (get creative with it!).
Customize: Customize stations to meet your grade level’s speaking and listening or content area criteria as well as student interests.
Station Rotation: Ensure you know the station rotation schedule and which station to go to.
Expectations: At each station, read what is expected of you.
Exit Ticket: Submit the exit ticket at the end of each station rotation.
