VOTING 101
Historic rain hit California just as Vote-By-Mail ballots were landing in mailboxes.
If materials were ruined due to the water (i.e. ballot and/or return envelope), voters can request a replacement ballot from their County election officials.
March Primaries 101
California's Election season runs from February 3rd - March 5th
This election is a Primary election, voters are deciding what candidate they like the most and who should continue to the General election (November).
Only the top two vote-getters will continue to the General. For some local elections, if a candidate receives more than 50% of the vote (a majority) they automatically win and do not need to wait until November.
If you are NOT affiliated with a political party (4.8 Million Californians are registered as "No Party Preference") AND you want to vote for U.S. President, then you will need to take an additional step.
Request a ballot from one of the following parties:
American Independent Party
Democratic Party
Libertarian Party
If you want to vote for the Green, Peace and Freedom OR Republican parties' Presidential candidates, then you need to re-register with that political party.
This election season, voters will be deciding on the following initiatives/candidates
1 State Measure
U.S. President (must be registered to political party or request ballot)
U.S. Senator (to fill the remainder of Sen. Dianne Feinstein's term and for the full term)
U.S. Representative in Congress (many incumbents have decided to retire or not run)
California State Senator (20 seats)
California State Assembly Member (80 seats)
