State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs)

State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) allow educators to use time spent involved in professional development activities to renew or progress their educator certificates. SCECH programs must follow strict content and delivery guidelines to ensure high quality professional development.

Two Types of SCECH Programs:

Traditional Programs:

Traditional Programs are blended/hybrid, face-to-face or virtual online conferences, meetings, or workshops offering professional development focused on a specific topic or related topics.

Non-Traditional Programs:

Non-traditional programs are activities which educators may participate in that are exceptions to the standard conferences and meetings offered as SCECH programs. These types of SCECHs are school-based programs. Examples of school-based non-traditional programs are:

Supervision of:

• Student Teacher/Teacher Intern
• School Counselor Internship
• School Psychologist Practicum/Internship

Mentoring a new:

• Teacher
• School Counselor
• School Psychologist
• Principal/Adminisrator

Meetings:

• K-12 School Improvement Team
• School Committee Meetings

Non-Traditional Cheat Sheet

District Provided Professional Development (DPPD):

• DPPD is the professional development offered by a LEA in order to fulfill the requirement of the Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) Section 380.1527. This legislation requires LEAs to offer five (5) days of teacher professional development annually.
• DPPD is not meetings.
• Educators can also get DPPD by attending offsite PD. The district has to approve these training's as DPPD and they must fall in line with your School Improvement Plan. The district must keep all documentation of all DPPD used whether a part of the five days offered by the district or an educator attends an offsite PD (example: a teacher attends a workshop at the Calhoun ISD and their district approves it as DPPD).

Renewing an Educators Standard or Professional Certificate:

• To renew a certificate the educator needs 150 hours
• The 150 hours can be a combination of SCECHS, DPPD, and/or semester hours.
• 1 semester hour = 25 SCECHs

Newly Revised Administrative Rules (effective November 15, 2017):

The new Administrative Rules affect teachers (Standard (provisional) and professional), administrators, school psychologists and school counselors. These rules do not affect SCECHs or the SCECH process.
