This training combines Crisis Response and Debriefing Skills in a one-day session. A Crisis Response Team takes a leadership role in a school district when a crisis occurs on or off campus. The training includes an overview of the What, Why, When, and How of Crisis Response; Recruitment; Team Roles and Responsibilities; and Handling a Crisis. The Debriefing Skills part of the training includes an Explanation of the Debriefing process; and viewing and participating in a Debriefing Role play.
Following this training, a district, preferably consisting of two or more members, will have a plan in place and a protocol to follow that is consistent and coordinated in the event of a crisis.
Calhoun County School Nurses present information on state laws governing medication administration. Topics include commonly prescribed medications for school children and methods of administration.
This training includes information for teaching reproductive health and HIV/AIDS to K-12 students. Participants will receive a MDE certificate for HIV/AIDS instruction.
This course does not certify teachers to teach sexuality education, but does certify them to teach HIV/AIDS. In order to teach sexuality education, teachers must be highly qualified.
HIV/AIDS instruction is mandated to be taught at each building level, in at least one grade, each year.
Meetings are held twice a year (fall and spring) for health educators to connect with each other across the five county region of Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, & St. Joseph counties. Health educators will receive important updates related to health education, delve into curriculum and assessment, and have time to collaborate and share ideas with other health educators.
Topics include Michigan Law regarding reproductive health, the role of reproductive health supervisors and advisory councils, curricula, approved materials, etc.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for persons age 15-24. According to the 2015-16 Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth Survey, one out of three Michigan students has symptoms of depression. About 20% of students have seriously considered suicide, and an average of 15% of students made a suicide plan. One in ten students actually attempted suicide.
