Now that you have learned about ecological footprints, you are ready to learn more about environmental problems that exist.
Some of the environmental issues that we deal with are caused by humans, while others are just natural problems.
Some human activities that degrade natural resources:
Crop plantations in place of forests
Dumping chemicals/wastes into water sources
Overuse and improper disposal of plastic
Watch this video about some of the common environmental problems that exist in the world today.
Make a list of environmental issues that you see in your community, your country, and your world. Use what you saw in the video to help you.
For example, one problem in our community is trash along the side of the freeway.
Now write 3 testable, specific questions about the issues you noticed/came up with on your list.
For example, if I put air pollution on my list, I might ask "Would putting air filtration devices into factory smoke pipes decrease the air pollution they put out?" This question is specific (filtration devices in factory pipes) and testable (if you had the right resources).
Another problem we face occurs when too many trees are cut down. This is called deforestation.
If you would like to see the dramatic difference in our forests, here is a time lapse video showing the change from the 1980s to 2020 of various forests around the world: Our Forests
Your task will be to read the Case Study below. As you read, pay attention to the negative side effects of deforestation. After you have completed the reading, answer the questions below.
Case Study Questions:
(Not all of the answers are going to be word-for-word in the text, you are going to have to use context clues to answer some of the questions.)
What were the negative effects of the deforestation?
What was the research question the scientists were exploring?
What was their hypothesis?
What was the control (independent) variable? How do you know?
What was the experimental (dependent) variable? How do you know?
What was the control? How do you know?
What kind of data were the scientists collecting?
What were the tools and methods used by the scientists?
Using the reading, create a list of steps that you think the scientists followed to carry out their investigation.
You will need to submit the responses to the Case Study Questions in Slate.
Make sure you use complete sentences and evidence from the reading.
This means you need to reference the case study and use direct quotations where appropriate (but the majority of your response should be in your own words).
This checkpoint allows me to give you feedback on your ability to show mastery in SCI.1.3, 1.4, as well as SCI1.1 and 1.2. All of these competencies will be included in your laboratory experience.
