WETLAND GUIDELINES
The Educational Center:
The wetlands has an onsite classroom for student learning. The building is equipped with A/C-Heat and has two restrooms. Students and guests are expected to follow all Calhoun County ISD school rules in addition to Wetland Guidelines during field trips.
Hand sanitizer is available in various places around the classroom.
The water fountain is currently not in use. (Water bottles will be provided.)
Classes must clean up after themselves.
All trash must be deposited in the trash cans.
One person at a time is allowed in each bathroom.
Recommended Items to Wear:
The majority of classroom learning will take place outdoors. Please consider the following:
Comfortable clothes (Dress warm in cooler weather.)
Walking or hiking shoes (closed toe shoes - no sandals)
Sunscreen
Long hair needs to be up or tied back.
Wetland Rules:
Stay out of the water.
Continue to follow all school rules and model good classroom behavior.
Pay attention, follow directions and participate.
No running.
Be respectful. No horseplay, fighting, or bullying.
Take care of and return items loaned to you.
Food and drinks are not allowed outside of the classroom. No gum.
Student purses or backpacks are not permitted at the Wetlands.
Report any injuries or incidents immediately.
10. Follow all safe laboratory and field procedures.
Field & Laboratory Safety:
There is an inherent danger in any "natural" setting. Be on the lookout and avoid snakes, spiders, wasps, and fire ants. To minimize the chance of injury to yourself or others:
Do not leave trails and do not enter any area of high grass or brush.
Do not attempt to capture any species known to sting or bite. This includes such insects and arachnids such as spiders, scorpions, bees, wasps, hornets, ants, and caterpillars.
Do not attempt to capture or harass any mammals, birds, amphibians, or reptiles in the Wetlands.
Do not run in the wetland including on the trails, pier, boardwalk, and inside the education center.
Do not climb or hang on anything.
Stay seated while on the trailer during wetland tours.
Do not touch or pick up animal carcasses.
Do not eat berries, fruits or seeds from any plant vegetation.
A limited number of students at a time will be allowed on the birding tower and touring trailer.
10. Know locations of fire extinguishers and safety equipment and know
emergency exit routes.
11. Never work alone and use lab equipment only for its designated purpose.
12. Minimize all chemical exposures and avoid skin and eye contact with all
chemicals.
13. Never leave containers of chemicals open.
14. Do not taste or intentionally sniff chemicals.
15. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
Remember to preserve the plant and animal life. Leave nothing but footprints - take nothing but memories!
