Middle School PE focuses on building student confidence, fitness, and goal setting. Most of the work students do for their PE courses takes place offline, as students are required to complete a minimum of 40 minutes of PE activity each day. Students set fitness goals to work towards each month, and keep a daily log of their physical fitness activity to track their progress and growth into becoming fit and healthy teenagers. In addition, students receive instruction on healthy eating and living habits, safety practices for exercises and sports, and the importance of emotional and mental health to healthy lives.
PE 8 builds student confidence, fitness, and goal setting in exercise, sports, and overall health. California Education Code 51934 requires all public schools to provide both comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education to students in grades 7-12 as part of the “Healthy Youth Act” that took effect in 2016. CalPac middle school students complete health education as part of their 8th grade PE course. Our units on sexuality, health and adolescence is structured to provide foundational scientific knowledge about the reproductive systems, adolescent development, abstinence, safe sex and birth control, pregnancy, sexual transmitted infections, communicable diseases, and healthy relationships.
DEFINITIONS
Comprehensive sexual health education means education regarding human development and sexuality, including education on pregnancy, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections. (Education Code 5 1931)
HIV prevention education means instruction on the nature of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), methods of transmission, strategies to reduce the risk of HIV infection, and social and public health issues related to HIV and AIDS. (Education Code 5 1931)
We want this to be a positive experience for students and parents so please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
Note: Pursuant to Education Code 51938, as amended by AB 329 (Ch. 398, Statutes of 2015), districts must use a "passive consent" or "opt-out" process regarding sexual health and HIV prevention education and any assessments related to that instruction. Thus, each student must receive the instruction unless the parent/guardian notifies the district in writing that the student should not receive the instruction.
Your Fitness Log is due for grading by the end of each LP. You should be updating your Fitness Log every school day, however grades will not be assigned until the due date. Your grade on your Fitness Log shows up under the additional category section on your student progress report. More information about how to complete your Fitness Log is below.
How Coursework Is Graded: All course parts (assignments, essays, labs, quizzes, tests, exams) are graded on student accuracy in response to multiple choice, short response, and essay based questions, so it is important that the student always try his/her best and take the necessary amount of time on every activity. Activities that require written responses should be done in complete sentences with correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. Activities, except for essays and labs, are auto graded by the computer. If you think you have answered a question correctly but were marked wrong please ask me to review your response and confirm your score. Essays and lab reports are manually graded by the teacher, however you will be able to continue on in the course while you wait for that assignment to be scored.
Passing Threshold for Student Work: Students must earn a 70% or higher on assignments, quizzes and tests to receive a passing grade and not be stopped for teacher review. If a student scores below a 70%, the student will be stopped at quizzes and tests and must wait for the content teacher to review the quiz or test before moving the student on.
Quiz Attempts and Retakes: Every quiz and test may be taken twice. The highest of the two attempts will be the recorded score. If the score is below a 70% on a quiz, the student may contact the content teacher for a third attempt based on that teacher’s retake requirements (sending in notes, attending tutoring, etc.). Any quiz, regardless of the score, may be attempted a third time following the content teacher’s retake requirements.
Unit/ Topic Tests: PE classes do not have unit tests.
Alternate Assignments: Alternate assignments may be assigned at the teacher’s discretion to students looking to raise low quiz and test grades. All students have the opportunity to complete these assignments and will be notified of assignment opportunities during each unit. Successfully completed assignments will count for a maximum of 5 points towards a low quiz or unit test, not to exceed 100%. Alternate assignments must be completed no later than one week after students finish the unit.
Final/Cumulative Exams: PE classes do not have final exams.
Fitness Log and Goals: Each month students will record their offline fitness activity and goals. Students must spend 40 minutes per day doing physical activity and this needs to be logged in the Fitness Log inside Edgenuity. Combined, Fitness Logs and goals make up 50% of a student’s PE grade so it is important that students take this log seriously and keep up daily to pass PE.
Save and Exiting on Quizzes, Tests and Exams: Students may save and exit quizzes and tests, and return to complete them at a later time. Keep in mind that any questions viewed or answered by the student will be locked when the student logs back into finish. Students may not save and exit on final exams.
Working Ahead and Pacing: Students are expected to follow the pacing in their Assignment Calendars for each week and are required to complete at least one quiz or test each school day. The Assignment Calendar shows what work is due for each class each school day and helps students plan out their weekly schedules. Coursework must be completed in the order it is listed. Students cannot jump around from lesson to lesson. It is important that students complete enough work each week to fulfil attendance requirements and to stay on pace in their classes. It is also important that students do not work too far ahead in any one course because they risk running out of work at the end of the semester and not meeting attendance requirements. Students who get 5 or more lessons ahead in a course will have a review put on by the content teacher to slow them down to keep them on pace. The student and the student’s homeroom teacher will be notified by the content teacher if a student is slowed down for getting too far ahead. Students that are doing extra work because they will be absent for an extended period of time need to let their homeroom and content teachers know in advance so that they are aware of why the student is working ahead and can make a note in the system.
EDGENUITY COURSE WORK: You must complete all assigned lessons for the week using your planner and assignment calendar. It does not matter what day(s) you complete your course work but all lessons for the week must be finished by FRIDAY!
Fitness Log and Goals: Each month students will record their offline fitness activity and goals. Students must spend 40 minutes per day doing physical activity and this needs to be logged in the Fitness Log inside Edgenuity. Combined, Fitness Logs and goals make up 50% of a student’s PE grade so it is important that students take this log seriously and keeps it up daily to pass PE. For more information on how to complete the Fitness Log click here.
Students are graded on a weighted 100 point scale: 100-90% is an A, 89-80% B, 79-70% C, 69-60% D, 59-0% F for all work submitted. Courses have different weighted categories for assignments (online content, practice, journals, and test reviews), essays, labs, quizzes, tests, exams, and additional category (live sessions and semester projects). Each category percentage counts towards the student’s final grade in the course. At the end of the semester students will earn either a P (60% or higher) or F (below 60%) on their report card for PE.
Edgenuity Coursework: 50%
Fitness Log: 50%
Student Attitude and Behavior: All students are expected to behave respectfully of teachers and their peers in all forms of interaction: live sessions, email correspondence and phone calls. Bullying in any form will not be tolerated. Failure to behave during live sessions or tutoring will result in removal from the room, phone call to parent and possible referral to the principal.
Attendance: Students are required to complete school work every school day to receive attendance for that day. If a student is absent for three or more days they will be notified with an attendance warning, regardless if the teacher was notified previously. If a student is repeatedly absent they risk being placed on an attendance contract and withdrawn from the school. There are no excused absences at CALPAC. If you are absent please make sure to notify me.
Plagiarism: We have a strict plagiarism policy at CALPAC. Plagiarism is defined as copying or using someone else’s work as your own. Make sure that all work you submit is your own and that if you do use someone else’s work that you properly give them credit for it. We will be discussing plagiarism in more detail in our English class and more information is available in the CalPac Student Handbook.
CalPac Student Handbook: Please refer to the CalPac Student Handbook for all CalPac School Policies.
