In today’s informatics field, effective teamwork is not just advantageous; it is indispensable, and a diverse team shares a range of perspectives and knowledge, leading to more innovative and robust solutions and fostering an environment of shared ownership, ultimately driving project success. Throughout the Informatics program courses, I increased my skills and project management knowledge and applied those skills during group project work. Group projects that tackled complex real-world problems and aimed to create meaningful solutions required combining project management skills and teamwork. When dealing with real-world problems, creating a project plan and assigning roles based on skills is crucial. Each team member can contribute to the best of their abilities, leading to a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Collaboration tools greatly facilitate teamwork and project management. Platforms like Slack, Google, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom, and cloud-based solutions such as Google Drive enable secure sharing and collaboration. These tools not only streamline communication and keep everyone informed and aligned with the project tasks and objectives, but also foster a sense of community within the team. To ensure security and ease of use, the groups I participated in used Google Docs and Zoom. This sense of community is essential for achieving common goals. Teamwork involves collaboration, cooperation, and mutual respect, and working in teams can generate innovative solutions and make working together more efficient. Broad knowledge of project management techniques is vital in healthcare as electronic health records systems evolve, regulatory oversight is high, and efficiencies are crucial to patient outcomes (Kate Eby | February 6). Research shows that implementing project management techniques in healthcare industries enhances efficiencies, reduces costs, and contributes to timely goal achievement (Project Management and quality in Healthcare: A systematic literature review). My courses prepared me with foundational knowledge of ethical and robust project management skills that can be applied to both small and large projects
I chose my final project from INFM 210 to demonstrate this competency. The project involved creating a mental health resource website with a team to address a real-world public health issue. As the project lead, I guided the team through task allocation, organization, and timely completion. Evidence for this competency includes the final paper, slide deck, PowerPoint presentation, and website link. The project effectively tackled the identified mental health issue by developing an interactive and easily accessible online resource. My role as project lead is evident in the organization, completion, and the team's efforts to address user-centric information and data issues by creating a comprehensive mental health resources website.
I selected this PowerPoint presentation as this was a team project, ideating how to inform what epidemiology is in an engaging manner. Epidemiology is at the heart of public health practices and studies population distribution and determinants of health and disease. It provides a user-centric foundation for understanding the patterns of illness, injury, and disability. Due to time constraints, we created a presentation that could be shared on YouTube to increase audience reach. The team first had to determine the target audience, and we developed a presentation that would be engaging for all audiences with no prior epidemiology knowledge. The presentation uses language that is clear, concise, and free from jargon, making even complex terminology easily understandable. Through teamwork, we created a compelling and informative video that improves public health knowledge. This evidence demonstrates working collaboratively in teams to solve a user-centric information and data problem.
The Informatics program has prepared me to plan, organize, and employ proactive problem-solving skills, with a focus on a user-centric approach to real-world informatics problems. In today's interconnected world, effective communication and seamless collaboration have become paramount. These skills are not only valuable across all fields but also hold particular significance in the healthcare informatics landscape. Project management knowledge can improve patient care, enhance efficiency, and reduce costs. The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is a key resource that provides comprehensive approaches to modern project management, and healthcare organizations can greatly benefit from implementing these methods into their operations (Project Management and Quality in Healthcare). In conclusion, project management skills, excellent communication, and teamwork skills are essential for all industries in today's global workforce.
