Being in class as much as possible is the MOST important factor in student success.
Punctuality is a problem: when coming in late, students are already behind in the lesson and may not be able to make sense of what is going on. Students are often late for first period and for the period after lunch. Some students are late for every class because they take the opportunity to socialize.
Every time a student leaves class unnecessarily (to meet up with friends or check their phone?) they miss something. Often students say things like, "it's a work period" or "we're not doing anything." That is very rarely true. Daily practice is crucial. Practice is cut short when the student is in the hall.
Ms. Caero is our attendance secretary. Parents/guardians, please leave a message or call her if your student is going to be late, absent, or has to sign out. Or use Safe Arrival.
Unexplained absences are a BIG problem. Classes are being missed without permission and explanation.
Parents/guardians: be aware; sometimes students pretend they are YOU when using the Save Arrival APP to say they'll be absent. It is best to contact Ms. Caero in person.
Parents and guardians: please help build resilience in your student by not signing them out of school if it is not needed. I sit next to the attendance desk and hear FAR TOO MANY reasons for students to leave school, especially when the schedule for the day is not normal.
- learn from the teacher
- practice skills in class
- get feedback from the teacher on how to improve
- demonstrate responsibility and reliability
- build work habits for the future
- learn the skills needed for the next grade level of this subject (if there is one or for the post-secondary future)
- learn to do one's own thinking rather than relying on AI
- build resilience
If students are consistently absent, the teacher will communicate with the parents/guardians. That is the teacher's job. The teacher's job is to try to get students to come to class every day.
