Key Stage 3

Twarthy Poems Across Ulster

A new multimedia KS3 resource designed to promote literacy through the exploration of Ulster-Scots poetry.

The project is supported by Northern Ireland Screen’s Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund.

The materials and resources are designed to promote learning and teaching about Ulster Scots and to help learners understand and appreciate the impact of Ulster-Scots history, literature, language and culture on identity of Northern Ireland.

Below, you can access some fantastic resources developed for Key Stage 3 use primarily for English, with Media, Poetry, Drama and History (Unit 6 is not available).

Thanks to Dr Frank Ferguson from Ulster University for making these materials available.

Making Northern Ireland

Making Northern Ireland site has been developed by The Nerve Centre with help from the Ulster Scots Broadcast Fund.

The purpose of this resource is to show how references to Ulster-Scots history and culture and the links between Ulster and Scotland form an essential part of the Home Rule debate in the years leading up to the creation of Northern Ireland in 1921.

The site is divided into three, interconnected Modules, all of which are provided with Timelines and Bibliographies. There is also a Glossary of the Ulster-Scots words that appear in the documents.

The site has been designed as an educational resource across a broad range of levels. As an example of how the site can be used at specific levels, several Student Tasks have been provided specially aimed at Key Stage 3 and 4 students. These tasks will allow the material to be explored creatively through the production of films, comic books and sound recordings.
