Writing

• We use a program called Step Up to Writing.

• Students will learn to write 2–3 sentences by themselves by the end of the year.

• We start learning how to write sentences in Quarter 2 or 3.

• We also use Fundations and sight words.

• In Quarter 3, students will take sight word tests.

Reading

• We use a reading program called Open Court Reading.

• I also use:

  • Small reading groups

  • Reading games

  • Word work

• We do reading groups 2–3 times a week. Some groups work with a teacher.

• The goal is for all students to read smoothly and easily by the end of the year.

• We also use Fundations for phonics every day for 15 minutes.

• In Quarter 3, we start using sight word lists to help with reading and spelling.

• You will get more information in January.

Math

• We use a math program called HMH Math.

• This year, we will group students by level.

• We are testing students now.

• After testing, students may have different math teachers.

• More information is coming soon.

Science

• We use a program called FOSS Science.

• We will learn many science topics.

• We also do fun experiments.

• Sometimes I will ask for help bringing supplies.

Social Studies

• Students learn about:

  • Rules and communities (civics)

  • Money and needs (economics)

  • Maps and places (geography)

  • Past events (history)
