📚 Reading — 10 Minutes a Night
Students will receive a monthly reading log.
Beginning of 1st grade: Aim for 10 minutes of reading each night.
After winter break: Aim for 15–20 minutes each night.
For every 10 minutes read, your child can color in a picture on their reading log.
Return a completed reading log at the end of the month to earn a prize!
Reading can look different each night. Your child can:
Read aloud to you or a sibling.
Listen while you or a sibling reads to them.
Take turns reading together.
💡 Bonus: Ask your child a quick question about the story to build comprehension!
Try asking:
Who is the main character?
Where does the story take place?
What happened first?
What was the problem?
How did the character solve the problem?
What happened at the end?
What do you think will happen next? Why?
➕ Math — 10 Minutes a Night
Students will practice skills from the current math unit using their homework workbook.
Math teachers will send the workbook home at the beginning of the year.
Math Teachers will let families know when a new unit begins.
Aim for about 10 minutes of practice each night.
Please don’t stress over homework! If your child becomes frustrated or is struggling with a concept, stop and reach out to their math teacher. Homework should provide extra practice—not frustration.
❤️ Family Time Counts!
Some of the most important learning happens outside of a workbook. We encourage families to spend time together doing things that build important life skills.
🎲 Play games: Practice cooperation, patience, and taking turns.
💬 Talk together: Family conversations build communication and listening skills.
🧁 Cook or bake: Measuring, following directions, and sequencing all build academic skills.
🧹 Help around the house: Chores teach responsibility and independence.
Our goal: Read a little, practice a little, and spend lots of time learning and connecting as a family!
