Assessment
A comprehensive system of data collection includes measures of different purposes that include screening, diagnostic, and progress monitoring tools, which are used to measure multiple points in time within a school year. Additionally, a comprehensive assessment system includes data sharing across school years to ensure vertical alignment of educational goals and progress as well as program evaluation and improvement.
In Byron, Balanced Assessment Systems are administered by teachers for several specific reasons:
- Identify students who are at-risk or who are experiencing difficulties on an ongoing basis and who may need extra instruction or intensive interventions if they are to make adequate progress toward grade-level expectations (screening measurements).
- Inform instructional planning in order to meet the needs of individual students (diagnostic measurements).
- Monitor students’ progress during the year to determine whether students in the intervention are making adequate progress in literacy development (progress monitoring measurements).
- Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and whether the instruction provided is intense enough to help students achieve grade-level outcomes by the end of each year (evaluation measurements). (MDE/MRA, 2010).
MCA - Individual Student Reports
Did you get your child's Individual Student Report (ISR) in the mail?
These reports should only be used to help you understand where your child is relative to the state standards. No other determinations should be made based on this information

MCA - Opting out of Testing
Parents have the option of opting out of statewide testing. However, we strongly encourage you to include your child is these assessments. Assessments help guide our curriculum decisions. If you chose to opt out, please discuss this with your building principal. Click here to view the MDE's Parent/Guardian Guide to Statewide Testing
Proficency Benchmarks
We continue to develop, refine, implement, and evaluate yearly our assessments to ensure we have a balanced assessment system. CIA coaches help teachers dissect their classroom data and use it to guide instruction. This ensures that we have immediate access to student data. Formative and Summative assessment creation will be embedded into our PLC process. You'll see our Grade Level Benchmark scores below. These are the minimum requirements that help guide our decision making.
