From Train Station to Top-Tier Dining: A Review of Modern on the Rails
By Maeve Rippy
Some restaurants impress you with their ambiance, while others impress you with the work of their talented chef. However, when deciding on a restaurant for a party with friends or a family dinner, there should be no reason to sacrifice one. Modern on the Rails manages to deliver both. Located in a beautifully restored train station in Mamaroneck with a menu that elevates traditional Italian cuisine, the only thing you will be asking for is another reservation.
The ambiance of this restaurant indeed held up to its name; from the moment you step out of your car, the charm is evident. When the old Metro-North train station shut down, its transformation into a family-owned business blends history with a modern design. From the outside, the building maintains its original red brick walls and arched windows, which provide charm that follows you inside. The restaurant has a cozy and inviting atmosphere with the building’s original high ceilings and a beautiful dark wood fireplace that provides a comforting warmth while you dine.
Of course, the food lived up the high expectations the ambiance set. Modern on the Rails offers all the Italian comfort food you may be craving - the only downside is that you might not know what to choose! Luckily, the service is terrific. Each time I have been there, the waiter has always been very knowledgeable about the menu and happy to make recommendations. When coming for my friend's birthday, we had a large group of girls at our table during a lively night; despite this, the staff was helpful and never rushed us.
We started with the traditional fried Calamari and the mozzarella sticks, which arrived golden and crispy. Both have a seasoned marinara sauce that creates the perfect bite. The calamari was tender and fresh, not chewy, which can be a common mistake. Although delicious and piping hot, the mozzarella sticks lacked a decent cheese pull, which is key.
For the main course, I ordered the Chicken Scarpariello, which had been recommended by my good friend Sofia DiMeglio, whose description of this meal left me with high expectations; she explained “This chicken is some of the best I have ever had! As someone who grew up in Southern Italy, I find it difficult to find delicious meals that remind me of home, but Modern on the Rails’ Chicken Scarpariello never disappoints. You have to try it! The fresh peppers give the perfect amount of heat that pairs nicely with the chicken and sausage; it leaves you full with just enough room for dessert.” After hearing this review, I knew I needed to try it, and I am so thankful that I did because it was everything Sofia stated. The portion was generous, giving you a good chicken-to-pepper ratio. The chicken, which was nice and tender, was accompanied by sauteed Italian sausage, roasted potatoes, and a mix of sweet and spicy peppers. All together, covered in the white wine sauce, it will surely make you want another bite. In addition, the meal came with a side of spaghetti that broke up the protein, completing the meal.
When it comes to the bill, Modern on the Rails will not cause you a profound debut; however, it would be considered a moderate to high price range. Each entree is around $25-35 dollars per person. However, it is essential to remember the high-quality ingredients used and the generous portion sizes, which make the price justifiable, especially for a special occasion.
If you are looking for a unique place with delicious food, I cannot recommend Modern on the Rails more. Whether celebrating with friends or enjoying a family dinner, it is worth the visit.
It's All About the Benjamins - A Culinary Review of Westchester's Premiere Steakhouse
By Carter Rice
Ironically, the Benjamin Steakhouse, located in the eastern corner of White Plains, is only a stone's throw from Pizza & Brew, the cozy Italian restaurant featured in my last review. Of course, they could not be more different, but they are both fantastic! Dining at the Westchester outpost of the vaunted Benjamin Steakhouse is most certainly an unforgettable experience, perfect for a wide range of special occasions. Could you eat here on an ordinary Friday night? Yes, but fair warning, the bill is certainly going to be most memorable as well.
The Benjamin Steakhouse was founded by Benjamin Prelvukak and Benjamin Sinanaj, two Albanian immigrants who came to the United States in the year 2000. Upon arrival, the pair worked their way up the proverbial "food chain" at the heralded Peter Luger's Steakhouse in New York City before trying their own hands at entrepreneurship.
Armed with a keen knowledge of the restaurant business, their venture was an immediate success which now lays claim to two other New York City locations in addition to their Westchester branch. For our purposes, we will focus on the Westchester location as it is most closely situated to our readership.
At first glance, the building is not particularly striking, appearing similar to the clubhouse at a municipal golf course. The parking situation is not much better, and using the valet service is highly recommended. Upon entering, the lobby area is somewhat tight, particularly on crowded nights. The bar area is fairly large, and you can both eat and drink at the bar if you are looking for a more expedited type of experience (which you might be because on any given Thursday through Saturday, the walk-in wait can be extensive). As expected, the decor is peppered with rich mahogany and crimson. Is it truly opulent? No. Is it what you expect from a very solid to high-end steakhouse? Absolutely. It also goes without saying that the service here is fairly spectacular as well.
After being seated, the menus presented offer a wide array of fine meats and wines unlikely to disappoint even the most critical of "foodies." The expected staples are phenomenal - filet mignon, rib-eye, and porterhouse are all can-not-miss selections. The sides here are also truly stellar. The creamed spinach, onion rings, and garlic mashed potatoes are all show-stoppers. Dessert is also as hoped, featuring New York-style cheesecakes, ice creams, creme brulee, apple tart, and so on. This is not to overlook the appetizers, which are also superb here. These include jumbo shrimp cocktail, steakhouse wedge salad, calamari, and more. However, my advice is to pass on the appetizers or only get a few, as the meats and sides are incredibly filling.
Having been here on numerous special occasions from New Year's Eve, my religious confirmation luncheon, a friend's birthday, and more, I can truly say it is a most special experience. The only downside really is the bill. It is certainly not a budget-friendly establishment - an entree will run anywhere from $65 to $90 per person. A bill for a table of four easily eclipses the $500 mark if not significantly more depending on beverages, appetizers, and dessert. I also would not recommend it if you are a vegetarian, but I assume that went without saying.
As such, if you're looking for a "night to remember" kind of place for "fancy steaks" without having to venture all the way into New York City, this spot should certainly be very high on your list, if not first. If you have not been, give it a try and let me know what you think. I would love to hear it!

Let's Settle the Debate: What's the Best Slice in Armonk?
By Maeve Rippy
In its 6 square miles, Armonk has a variety of iconic pizza spots. Given this, there can be quite a debate when it comes to selecting an establishment for a pizza night. The contenders include Broadway North, Nick’s Pizza, Amore, and Fortina. Although it may get controversial, as a local Armonk citizen who finds themselves eating pizza almost every week, I promise to consider all factors and make the ultimate decision.
Broadway North is a classic option. With a wide variety of food types and styles, you are guaranteed a good bite. Specialty pizzas range from BBQ chicken, vegetable, meat lovers, and Hawaiian (whatever your take on pineapple and pizza may be). Whether you want to sit down at one of the many tables for a meal or just grab a quick pie, you are almost always guaranteed a run-in with a past middle school teacher as an added bonus. The crispy crust and gooey cheese never let you down, making it a serious candidate.
Next, we have Nick’s. Whether you crave a single slice of greasy deliciousness or a mega 25” pie for the team, Nick’s guarantees a tasty bite for any occasion. While technically not located in the town square of Armonk, Nick’s is a hidden gem off Route 22. It is a prime location for a quick after-school snack or a celebration after a big game, making it a clear contender for Byram Hills student-athletes. Like Broadway, Nick’s provides a wide variety of toppings from classic pepperoni, Sicilian (thick crust), or even as crazy as shrimp scampi. They provide for whatever cravings you may have. Furthermore, nothing pairs better with a hot slice of bubbling greasy pizza than the refreshing sweet taste of creamy ice cream to cleanse the pallet. Nick’s may be great as a grab-and-go location, but it lacks seating. Although there are some folding tables outside, the popularity of this location can make it feel cramped—all crucial facts to consider.
Where Nick’s may fall short, Fortina thrives. This Best of Westchester award-winning restaurant truly represents Italian culture through its rustic feel and cozy sit-down style. You can sit inside to watch a sports game or enjoy the beautiful Armonk lights year-round. Fortina makes delicious pizza, taking a gourmet approach to fan-favorite classics and even inventing unique combinations of their own. This is a perfect restaurant for family dinner nights and friend get-togethers. Although the selection size may be smaller than that of other establishments, Fortina makes up for it with its unique flavors. It does not matter if you are enjoying the fresh mozzarella and basil on their Classic Margherita or feeling adventurous with the Fig and Goat Cheese pizza that is packed with the ideal combination of sweet and salty flavors. The traditional thin, crunchy crust of pizza at Fortina will create the perfect night out. It is important to note that although these pizzas are fresh from the oven, they tend not to travel as well as other pizzerias.
And finally, Amore. The name truly captures what this pizzeria is all about. These pizzas are crafted with love and the freshest ingredients, coming directly from their very own garden. With every bite, you will crave more. Whether you want to enjoy this cheesy meal in the upbeat atmosphere of their downtown Armonk location or use their quick delivery to enjoy the comfort of your own home, Amore's pizzas will never disappoint. These American-style pizzas are known for their flavorful and fluffy crust, which can be difficult to find. The restaurant is perfect for dinner with family and friends due to its casual, comfortable dining. The beautiful patio makes this spot incredibly enjoyable in warmer months as well. Amore’s passion is depicted through every meal that is served - you honestly can’t ask for much more. It becomes abundantly clear to me that Armonk has their pizzas down to a science.
While Armonk is full of a wide variety of exceptional pizzas, my ultimate choice for the best pizza goes to Amore. Their combination of fresh ingredients, fluffy and flavorful crust, and overall great environment makes it the perfect location for both dining in and delivery. When interviewing Ava Accurso, a student at BHHS, she shared that Amore “is the perfect place to hang out with friends and grab a delicious slice of pizza. Their classic cheese pizza has to be me and my sisters’ favorite pizza; the cheese pull is amazing!” As you can see, Amore captures the hearts (and stomachs) of Armonk citizens, making them the ultimate winner in this debate.
Racanelli's: A Rave Review
By Carter Rice
Nestled on the edge of the White Plains border with Elmsford sits Racanelli’s Original Pizza and Brew, an unassuming Italian restaurant in the Greenburgh Shopping Center that most would certainly avoid based on looks alone. The exterior is worn at best, and the location is remarkably unremarkable. Stepping inside, the dated interior is no more impressive. However, as the adage often rings true, looks can certainly be deceiving.
In fact, the food is so good here, that I have lost count of how many times my family and I have enjoyed a late Friday night dinner or Sunday lunch after a soccer game at this local fan favorite. After the first bite hits your taste buds, the décor you once questioned somehow becomes a charming throwback to the 1980’s and the exterior fading paint and window coverings a show of character developed over decades of dining experiences.
With respect to the menu – there are few surprises, except for just how delicious everything is. In my view, the real key to their success is their incredible marinara sauce. It is rich, vibrant, tangy yet sweet, and always 100% fresh. For starters, visitors are treated to complimentary warm baked bread, dipping oils, and olives. After enjoying a fountain soda (from a pitcher if you choose), the appetizer and main course options are almost limitless, from veal parmigiana to stuffed manicotti. Every time we go, we try something new. It should go without saying, but the pizza is also an absolute showstopper. Before eating here, I did not even know it was possible for pizza to be served so hot (think knife and fork scalding type levels). When we have leftovers, the cold marinara sauce and hardened cheese also make a sublime late-night snack.
If you have ever read any of my reviews in the past, you would also know I am on a quest for the “World’s Best” chicken parmigiana. While the championship belt still belongs to Il Mulino in Disney World’s Dolphin Hotel, this fried slice of heaven is aiming for a title shot. Other notable fan favorites are the meatball appetizer served with sauce, the penne vodka, and the salads: the arugula pear or house salad with grilled chicken and vegetable medley in particular. Desserts at Racanelli's are also standard Italian, including tartufo, cheesecake, cannoli, and more. Lastly, the staff and owners here are simply outstanding. They are friendly, fast, and always attentive without being too intrusive. Simply put, perfect service. If there was any possible knock here, on Friday nights, walking in requires almost an hour-long wait, so reservations are recommended.
In sum, Racanelli's Original Pizza & Brew is a beloved local establishment that combines quality Italian cuisine with a warm atmosphere. Despite its seemingly disheveled appearance, this shockingly good eatery is well worth a visit for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Italian flavors in a friendly setting. My personal experience leads me to rate it 4.7 out of 5 stars, reflecting my appreciation for the quality of food and service. If you happen to make it over, drop me a note and let me know what you think. Maybe I will even see you there!

The Perfect, Easy, but Impressive Dessert: Millionaire's Shortbread
By Kira Rosen
My mom has been begging me for years to make one specific dessert: Millionaire's Shortbread, with its three beautifully crafted layers. The first layer is a golden brown shortbread cookie, followed by a thick layer of gooey caramel, and a third layer of semi-sweet chocolate ganache. The joy on my mother's face after taking a bite is worth millions to me. If a dessert can make anyone, such as my mother, so happy, it’s no wonder I recommend this dessert to everyone!
To make the shortbread you need:
-1 cup of salted butter
-½ cup of granulated sugar
-2 egg yolks
-⅛ teaspoon of salt
-2 cups of all-purpose flour
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and get a baking pan roughly 10-13 inches. Beat room temperature butter until it is very light and fluffy. Then, add the sugar. Mix the sugar and butter for 4 minutes or until light and fluffy once again. Add the egg yolks and salt, and mix. Lastly, add flour and mix until the ingredients are combined.
After baking for about 12 minutes or until golden brown, you want to make your caramel. Once the shortbread is done, let it cool and have it easily accessible for when you pour the caramel. Homemade caramel is a daunting task, but it is not that hard. You need:
-1.5 cups of granulated sugar
-½ cup of water
-10 tablespoons of unsalted butter
-1 cup of heavy whipping cream
-3 teaspoons of vanilla
-⅛ teaspoons of salt
Begin by heating the sugar and water in a small pot until it becomes clear and bubbles. Do not mix the pot once this happens. Instead, lift the pot and swirl it in case you need to clean the sides. This should take about 5 minutes on medium heat. After, let the mixture cook for 10 minutes and try to prevent clumps by swirling the pot. Once it becomes slightly amber, add butter, cream, salt, and vanilla. Heat until very hot: if you have a candy thermometer, it should reach 230 Celsius. Now, simply pour the caramel over the shortbread in an even layer. If you do it right, it should solidify but still hold a gooey consistency. For 10 minutes, allow the shortbread and caramel to cool in the fridge.
In the meantime, gather the materials to create the chocolate ganache. You need:
-2 cups of chocolate of your choice (my favorite is milk chocolate)
-1 cup of heavy whipping cream
Making the chocolate ganache is the easiest part of the dessert. Simply melt the chocolate on either a double burner or with the microwave (an easier method) and mix in the heavy cream. Lastly, pour the chocolate in an even layer over the shortbread and caramel. After this last step, you have made Millionaire's Shortbread! I recommend letting the chocolate cool before digging into your dessert. You could share it with family and friends, but it may be so delicious that you’ll want to keep it all for yourself!

As a New Yorker, it is rare to come across legit BBQ food, unless, of course, your mother or father is “Q’ing” on the patio at home. A stereotypical New York diet usually consists of well-made Italian dishes, classic American dishes (if that’s even a thing), and I would care to say Mediterranean food. However, to most, it seems that it requires a trip outside of the state to find some half-decent barbecue food. I am here to inform you that this statement is completely and utterly false. Delicious, homemade BBQ doesn’t require a trip out of the state, and it doesn’t even require a trip out of the county!
Br’ers BBQ in Bedford Hills, NY is hands down the top rated Texas-style BBQ in a 100 mile radius. A small, hidden storefront with both limited parking and seating, this place is a pickup-and-go restaurant. Ranging from crispy burritos and hot fried chicken to smoked brisket, Br’ers allows for foreign southerners, who are visiting NY, to feel just right at home as they indulge in this Texas-inspired meal.
Now, I bet you’re thinking: This kid’s praising this place so much, but what is his order? Well, I’m a chicken guy. Some call me Gustavo Fring Jr. So, I usually get the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, with a side of Mac & cheese, and a side of cornbread (we’ll get to this cornbread in a second). I cannot recommend the chicken sandwich enough, and funny enough, the first time I tried it, I had to thank the chef behind the counter for his meticulous creation of deliciousness.
The man whom I owe my thanks to for showing me this restaurant is a Junior at Byram Hills. Jake Rosenberg, who is locally known for his food reviews, casually recommended Br’ers to me at the beginning of last year. I cannot thank him enough for his recommendation.
I asked Jake about his own experience with Br’ers. He illustrated to me how impactful this place was, “and the sheer joy that overcame me when I tried their brisket.” He goes on to explain his own history: “I first tried good BBQ when I went to Austin, Texas, a few years back. There’s just nothing else like it anywhere else in the world. The juiciness and tenderness of the meat are just so hard to replicate, and they just do it better in Texas. One day my brother ordered Br’ers on Uber Eats because he was in the mood for BBQ and wanted to try something new. OH MY GOD. I almost was drawn to tears by this meal. The meat fell off the bone effortlessly, and the cornbread was like no other.”
I asked Jake how many times he had been back since that day, and he told me that he had been “more days than I could count. For the Westchester area Br’ers BBQ is undoubtedly the number one food spot and undeniably the most underrated. I’ve brought more friends there since I’ve tried it and they’ve all said it’s the best food they’ve ever had in their life.”
Jake had just recently flown to Texas, on a visit to the university and I wondered if Br’ers was in any way comparable to the original southern flavor. He exclaimed, “ If anything the cornbread at Brers was way better than it is in Texas and it’s honestly the best I’ve ever had. Br’ers BBQ is a pretty small spot and I don’t think many people know about it. But it’s the best food I’ve ever had in Westchester and I hope more people discover it.”
Jake clearly is a huge fan of Br’ers, and I share his sentiment. This place is phenomenal. So much so, that I was debating “gatekeeping” the restaurant for my own benefit. But, I think it’s important to support local businesses like Br’ers, and this place deserves all the love and attention it can get.
I couldn’t recommend Br’ers in Bedford Hills more. Go check it out.

Caffeine—an everyday stimulant drug found in coffee, tea, and cocoa—acts on the brain and the nervous system. Consumption of caffeine increases the circulation of chemicals such as dopamine and adrenaline, causing an individual to feel more energetic and happy. It also blocks the effects of adenosine (a chemical that makes you feel sleepy) increasing alertness, attention, and cognitive function. Despite these seemingly positive short-term effects, excessive consumption of caffeine may lead to a myriad of harmful effects in the long term.
What is quantified as safe consumption of caffeine?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggests that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day (4-5 cups of brewed coffee) is generally considered safe for most adults. In addition, the FDA does not provide specific recommendations for caffeine consumption in teens, but they do suggest that children and adolescents should consume caffeine in moderation.
Regularly consuming more than 400 mg of caffeine per day is often considered excessive and can increase the risk of experiencing adverse effects. These may include restlessness, heart problems, anxiety, bone thinning, digestive issues, and increased blood pressure. Moreover, regular use of caffeine can lead to tolerance, and like any addictive substance, you’ll need more caffeine to achieve the same effects over time. This may result in caffeine dependence and withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and irritability when caffeine consumption is reduced or stopped. If you or a family member suspects they are consuming too much caffeine or experiencing these effects, consider reducing caffeine intake and consulting a healthcare professional.
How can we naturally increase our energy levels without caffeine?
Drink adequate water. Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining your energy levels. Dehydration can lead to feelings of fatigue and lethargy. To ensure you’re properly hydrated, aim to drink at least 64-80 ounces (roughly 2 liters) of water. Intake may vary on activity level, climate, or personal preferences.
Exercise daily. Regular physical activity increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to your muscles and improves overall cardiovascular health. Whether you choose activities such as running, walking, sports, or strength workouts, find something you enjoy and aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week.
Sleep at least 8 hours per night. Quality sleep is paramount for maintaining energy and overall well-being. By establishing a consistent sleep schedule with an ideal sleeping environment, this will ensure a
Avoid processed foods and incorporate a variety of vegetables and fruits into your diet. The quality of your diet plays a significant role in your energy levels. Sugary snacks and excessive carbohydrate intake can cause energy spikes and crashes. Rather, a balanced diet of nutrient-rich foods can provide a steady source of energy and stabilize blood sugar levels.
By adopting these lifestyle changes and incorporating healthy habits, you can naturally increase your energy levels and maintain a sustained sense of vitality and well-being without relying on caffeine.
Overall, it’s important to note that individual responses to caffeine can vary significantly. What is considered a safe and moderate caffeine intake for one person may be excessive for another. It’s essential to be mindful of your own tolerance and to consider factors like age, weight, overall health, and individual sensitivities when assessing the long-term effects of caffeine on your body.
