Gender Equality
Gender Equality
Natalie is a 16-year-old girl. And she never gets to play sports. Because in her community, only boys are allowed to play sports. Millions of girls every day face problems like this, and only because of their gender. Do you think that's right?
Natalie's Story
Natalie grew up in Chad, Africa. With her mom, dad, and sister Thalia. Thalia and Natalie are discriminated against because of their gender, and millions of other women are too.
We can change the world
If we achieve Gender Equality, millions of women around the globe, including Natalie, will secure jobs, earn higher wages, and hold more senior positions. It will also ensure that women will have access to all rights.
Why Gender Equality is important
The most important Sustainable Development Goal for people to achieve first is Goal 5, Gender Equality. Women can be discriminated against because of their gender. Some examples of this are, they can be paid less, they can be treated differently in school, and girls are easy targets for attacks. Evidence from the UNCEIF SNG is that “Gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, child marriage, an education denied ─ gender inequality takes many harmful forms.” This can result in women not being able to get good jobs, which can lead to poverty. “On average, women in the labor market still occupy only 30 per cent of managerial positions globally, and women spend about two and a half times as many hours in unpaid domestic and care work as men.” This evidence is also from the UN SDH Flipbook. The effect of these problems can lead to trauma, poverty, or worse. This is why Goal 5, Gender Equality, is the most important goal to achieve first.
