The PRIDE Program provides an immersive community-based experience for transition age (18- to 21-year-old) special education students with mild to moderate needs. Students participate in real-world settings to practice independent living responsibilities and explore vocational opportunities through Work-Based Learning Experiences (WBLE) in the community.
PRIDE Stands for:
•Personal Maintenance
•Recreation and Leisure Opportunities
•Independence in the Community
•Domestic Living Skills
•Employment Training Opportunities
PRIDE is located in The Pathfinder School in Bethel Park, a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA. The program is situated directly on a public transportation trolley route, with a wide variety of business and community resources within walking distance. This allows for quick and easy access to many neighborhoods and is an advantage when providing travel instruction and other community integration activities.
PRIDE staff consists of special education teachers, work-based learning coordinators (job coaches), vocational teachers, related service providers, a transition consultant, and a travel trainer. Students have access to social work services, both as a group and individually. PRIDE also has an ongoing relationship with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) and counselors provide valuable input to student IEP and other career planning meetings.
