Welcome to Bowen Peer Support Leaders Microsite
Failure hurts. But, if you can look beyond the disappointment and despair, you will learn invaluable skills that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Watch how Mdm Pua helped her student, Shirley overcome failure by teaching her to never give up and igniting in her a passion for learning. Remember, learning requires effort and patience. The more you make the effort to learn, stay curious and find ways to improve, the more you would really learn. And fortunately, the more you focus on learning, the better you will get at it. Learning will become easier. Be willing to exercise patience, perseverance and faith in yourself.
Our teachers often scold us and punish us, but have you thought of their real intentions behind those actions? Not all teachers are as how they are often portrayed - soft-spoken and smiling when supporting students. Some teachers are stricter and probably, fiercer. This does not however mean they do not care for you. More of often than not, it is because they hold a fervent belief in your potential - a potential that you may have somehow missed or found it difficult to notice in yourself. Unlock your potential, Bowenians. Stay committed towards your learning and growth. Forge ahead with fortitude - but, together with your teacher.
Managing your learning is crucial if you wish to reach your personal best and fulfill your academic aspirations. But, you must also have the courage to earnestly LEARN FROM YOUR FAILURES and rectify the missteps made. This is crucial. One can only develop a better ability for critical-thinking - and self-reflection - doing this. The PSLs would like to recommend the following three general tips to get you started with managing your learning!
This helps you to plan ahead and be more organised in your learning!
This helps you to monitor and regulate your thoughts and actions, thus facilitating learning!
This can help to eliminate procrastination, and allows you to clarify your doubts when needed!
Bowen's Learning Routines is an intentional framework of thinking, actions and attitudes that help Bowenians achieve the most out of our Bowen Experience. Ready Be! also outlines and describe desirable values and behaviours. It is an encompassing student guide for Bowenians.
The most natural and powerful form of learning is through experience, or more precisely through reflection on doing. This form of learning is also known as experiential learning.
Active learning means you participate and collaborate with others, and apply concepts to the real world. It requires hard mental effort but one that leads you to achieve better retention and understanding.
Deliberate practice is a mindful and highly structured form of 'learning by doing'. It is a process of continuous experimentation to achieve mastery, and eventually full automaticity of a specific skill.
081127882 is a hard number to remember but if you chunk it into 081 127 882, it becomes easier. Cutting large bits of information into smaller pieces helps with remembering. The process is called Chunking.
S.M.A.R.T goals is a well-known tool that we can use to set of our goals and objectives. By using the S.M.A.R.T method to set our goals, we ensure we are effectively organising our thoughts and resources to direct our efforts towards our goals. However, it would be even more rewarding if we are S.M.A.R.T.E.R in our goals setting!

STEPS FOR THE CORNELL NOTE-TAKING METHOD
Divide your notebook into three sections: Cues column, Notes column, and Summary area as shown in the picture.
During the lesson, record important points, diagrams, and formulas under the notes section.
After the lesson, jot down possible questions and keywords about the topic.
Summarise the lesson in your own words.
Cover up the notes sections, and use the possible questions and keywords to test yourself!
Review your notes frequently :)
WHY USE THE CORNELL NOTE-TAKING METHOD?
The Cornell Note Taking Method is an efficient and effective method to take down your notes! It encourages you to actively review your notes by summarising the lesson's content. It increases your understanding of the topic using questions. With Cornell notes, you will find yourself retaining information for a longer period of time!
The mind map is an effective method to take notes for specific types of subjects. If you are a visual learner who struggles with studying from certain notes, e.g., Cornell Notes, then you should use the mapping method! Mapping helps you to remember better because you are drawing links and connecting relationships between many concepts in a topic.
The Feynman Technique is a simple 4-step study technique to help understand a topic effectively. The technique helps you recognise gaps in your knowledge, giving you a quick and efficient way to close up those gaps by employing specific learning actions (see the diagram for details). Using the Feynman Technique as your learning strategy can ultimately help you better understand a topic!
