Research on how the brain learns tells us that short, consistent practice is one of the best ways to strengthen long-term learning.  Each time students recall a math skill from memory, they build and reinforce the neural pathways that make future learning easier.  This process, called retrieval practice, helps students move knowledge from short-term memory into long-term memory.

In our classrooms, we learn new concepts every day, but true mastery comes from revisiting and practicing those skills over time.  Just 15-20 minutes of focused math practice at home a few times each week can improve accuracy, build confidence, and help students retain what they've learned.  Frequent practice gives the brain repeated opportunities to retrieve information, making, making math facts and problem-solving strategies easier to access when students need them.  

So, what can this look like for you at home?  We have a variety of resources linked to support YOU in supporting your child at home.  While we don't assigned required homework, we strongly 20 minutes of math practice/night comprised of any of the following activities:

• Multiplication and division fact fluency practice.  Your child's teacher will communicate more to you about what this looks like in their invidual classrom.  When in doubt, standard flash cards are fantastic!

• Completing 3 IXL skills per week.  A skill is "complete" once a student earns a SmartScore of 80, which indicates they have demonstrated proficiency with that particular content. Research shows that students who reach this milestone each week consistently make over a year's worth of growth in mathematics in one school year.  Each skill takes an average of 10-20 minutes to complete. While students may have some time at school to work on these, it's not guaranteed as we try our best to maximize our learning at school with a more hands-on approach, rather than time on the computer.  We will "assign" codes to your child that they can choose from, or you can have them type in any of the suggested codes on the unit resources pages linked below.

• Working on any of the additional practice problem worksheets (also provided via the links below).  Please note, depending on where we are in the unit, there may be problems on the worksheets involving skills we haven't yet covered in class.  Keep an eye on our weekly newsletter to see which skills students learned and practiced at school each week!

• Doing any of the hands-on activities suggested in the Family Video (linked on the resources page for each unit).
