If you have a good pun, great. Here are some don'ts so you don't screw it up. These tips are coming from the MOSU (Master of Screw Ups), Matthew Berg. Coincidentally, there are some spelling mistakes that I (Evelyn, the general editor) had to fix! (Update 18/4/2018) Oof!
I used to have some great puns. Until I overused them. There are two sides to overuse. The first is quite obvious. If someone hears a pun once, it's funny. If you use it again, okay cool. The more your audience hear the pun, the less surprising it is. Take a look at the psychology behind funny things. Quite obvious, right? But here's the real problem people don't usually see: you get tired of your own pun. Yes! That can happen. The more you hear the pun, the less funny it is. When you aren't enthusiastic about your pun, it won't work, and will seem that you are just talking out of your butt. Keep these things in mind, even if you want the world to hear your pun.
