Check out the "Practice Expectations" document that Mrs. Murphy updates in Schoology to know what to practice.
Develop a routine for when to practice. Whether it’s after breakfast and before school, a calming activity upon arriving home, or an after-dinner activity, decide when you want to practice. If it’s built into your schedule, it will be easier to maintain.
Have a special place for practice where you can, ideally, also store your instrument, music stand, and music. Make this a special place that is your own retreat! When you are in your music space, others will know to honor and respect your space and time.
If you get frustrated, be patient with yourself! Learning new skills is hard! It means you’re challenging yourself and getting better.
Find music that is interesting to you! You can find music books at local music stores or online. Mrs. Murphy also recommends Noob Notes and 8notes (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass).
Amount of practice and length is grade dependent:
5th grade: Practice is 2-3 times a week on the weeks we do NOT have music class. Length should start around 10 - 15 minutes. As we learn more music, the practice length will increase to around 15 - 20 minutes.
6th grade: Practice is 2-3 times a week on the weeks we do NOT have music class. Length should start around 15 - 20 minutes. As we learn more music, the practice length will increase to around 20 - 25 minutes.
7th/8th grade: Practice is 2-3 times a week. Length should start around 20 - 25 minutes. As we learn more music, the practice length will increase to around 25 - 40 minutes.
