Welcome to the 2026 Cross Country Season!
Good afternoon, everyone!
First, let me give a shoutout to Lucas and Martina for winning the Boys and Girls High School races at the Pearl Street Mile last night! It was fun seeing a decent group of Fairview runners at the event, and I had a blast cheering for you.
Now, on to business. I've typically taken the 4th of July week off from Summer Running to visit my family in Illinois, but airfare is insane, and the thought of driving 30+ hours round-trip with a toddler somehow seems even less sane. So, we will continue to meet on our normal schedule this week. If you are lucky enough to travel, have fun! Workouts will be on FinalSurge, but please be present with your friends and family. Ultimately, getting an easy run in is better than stressing about where to do a fartlek or long run, so focus on consistency rather than intensity in training at this stage.

FinalSurge
I think most of you have been invited, and if you haven't, please let me know so I can get you straightened out. I encourage you to add notes to your runs. I love reading logs more than I like to see the numbers your watch is reporting.
Flex Days
As some of you continue to build your mileage, especially my older athletes who have expressed wanting to increase their training volume, the flex days on Friday and Saturday give you a good chance to double or experiment with cross-training. If you need help with what to do on these days, just ask. I'm here to help guide you, but I also want to give you time and space to do other things that are going to help you as a runner and bring enjoyment and a short break from rigid training.
Our mission is to build life-long runners who enjoy the challenges and rewards of self-discovery and growth through the lens of running. The sport does not have to be the only thing in our lives, quite the contrary, we should be using distance running to learn more about ourselves and how to handle trials and tribulations we might experince as students, employees, or even partners in a relationship. As my legendary college coach, Al Carius used to say: "Run for fun and personal bests."
Parents!
I get a lot of emails about missing communications because their child/children are not the best about communicating my weekly updates. You can use this website as a point of information, but if you also wish to be included on the weekly email updates, please fill out this form so we can make it happen!
