The really magical things are the ones that happen right in front of you. A lot of the time you keep looking for beauty, but it is already there. And if you look with a bit more intention, you see it.
This introductory course deals with traditional black and white 35mm photography as well as digital photography and teaches the basic camera handling, and darkroom procedures. Students learn how to control light to produce an aesthetically pleasing image. Composition and the elements and principles of art are introduced. In addition, digital photography, photograms, special effects, and the history of photography may be addressed.
Photography 2
This one term course provides an opportunity for students to improve their ability to see, take, and create a photographic image. Students focus on intermediate photographic skills and experiment with darkroom techniques such as sepia toning, hand coloring, and multiple images. Personal style, appreciation for quality and respect for artistic expression will also be stressed. The role of photography in history and cultural traditions will be included. Students analyze and evaluate their own work as well as photography created by others.
Photography 3
This third level course will build upon the experiences of level 2. In this course, students are encouraged to work in depth to initiate and carry out photographic ideas on a more independent basis. Medium format, digital and color photography may be introduced. This course deals with improving the student’s ability to see, take and create a photographic image. Students may be given opportunities to work with medium format, sepia toning, hand coloring, multiple images, special films, digital images, specialty lenses, filters and other photo techniques and processes. Masters of photography may be studied. Large photo prints may be taught.
Photography 4
This fourth-level course will build upon the experiences of level 3 to expand darkroom and photo-taking skills and increase the confidence of the students as photographers. This is an advanced-level course designed to give students expanded skills and increased confidence in their ability to create photographs. Proficiency in basic skills will be expected. Students may be expected to make decisions about what the subject matter of their artwork will be and set their own goals and deadlines. Some instruction may be given on an individual basis with the student’s particular career goals in mind.
