Hi! I’m Kelly Asselin, a.k.a. "Coach Asselin", and this is my ninth year at Louisville Middle School (basically forever in middle school years).
I was born wildly competitive — like, racing people to tie my shoes kind of competitive — and I’ve loved sports for as long as I can remember. In high school, I played volleyball, swam, and ran track (why pick one when you can be exhausted all year long?). Track ended up being my ticket to the University of Northern Colorado, where I competed in the heptathlon — seven events of controlled chaos for women who don’t know how to sit still.
I graduated from UNC in 2011 with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science with an emphasis in K-12 PE, and in 2018 I earned a Master’s in Health and Wellness Education — because I love school so much, I keep going back.
Before coming to LMS, I taught high school PE and health in Colorado Springs at the same high school I once roamed as a teenager. Yes, I worked with some of my former teachers, and yes, it was kinda weird.
Outside of teaching, I coach (volleyball and track), ride my cruiser bike, swim, read, binge true crime podcasts like I moonlight as a detective, and hang out with my family, and friends. I’m also unapologetically obsessed with anything pink or tie dye — think “hippie Barbie, but make it PE.”
Beyond movement and fun, I’m deeply passionate about mental health and suicide prevention. I sponsor Sources of Strength, our suicide-prevention and resilience-building club here at LMS, and it’s a cause that’s near and dear to my heart. Supporting students' emotional well-being is just as important as helping them stay physically healthy — and I’m all in for both.
