My name is Kelly Carlson and I am the high school counselor at Boulder Universal. Summer went by very quickly as usual, but there were so many sweet moments to savor. My family and I got to enjoy a little bit of travel and lots of down time. I also got to do a lot of different art projects which I rarely have time for but they definitely fed my creative side ;)
Week 1 and 2 were busy here at BU as students kicked off the semester. I loved getting to see so many students!
All students should be settled into their schedules and classes by this point. They were asked to review their schedules in Advisory last week and alert me with any questions and/or concerns. Here is a link to the BU Handbook where you can find information in regards to schedule change policy.
For those of you who don’t know me - I have been a counselor in BVSD since 2008 and I think that I love my job more each year that I work. School counseling is a passion of mine and it brings me great joy to partner with students and families throughout their high school journey.
The Boulder Universal counseling department is modeled after the American School Counselor Association standards for career, academic and personal/social development which are delivered through a class called Advisory in grades 9-12. I will work closely with students to help them identify their strengths and create pathways that will help them pursue their aspirations through their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP). Learn more about ADVISORY.
The main focus for Advisory in the first couple of week is organization and getting the school year started:
Double checking schedules and classes
Reading and acknowledgement of BU Student Handbook
Planning the school week (5 hrs per course per school week)
Organizing GoogleDrive and Schoology classes
Setting up Reflection journals
Creating weekly task lists based on pacing guides in classes (this will continue every week throughout the semester)
Counseling information is posted on my HS Counseling Updates and I send a monthly counseling newsletter to keep you in the loop.
Students don’t forget - your potential has strength! Dream big and never underestimate what you can give to the world.
Have a fabulous day!
