I work with all students in kindergarten through 5th grade to ensure that they are learning, happy, and safe. I do this by working collaboratively with students, parents, staff, and administrators to support student growth and development. Additonally, I provide leadership at a buiding and district level in order to best serve all of our students.
What that looks like on a daily basis:
Classroom Lessons: Twice a month, I go into each classroom and lead a lesson that aligns with the BVSD Elementary Counseling Standards. These lessons focus on social-emotional learning, school readiness skills, and career exploration. At Bear Creek, we use the Second Step Bullying Prevention Curriclum and the Sources of Strength Curriclum to support our students social emotional learning.
Small Group Counseling: I provide small group counseling as needed. The groups are formed based on student needs and students are invited to join based on teacher or parent referral. While group topics vary based on need, some examples of topics include friendship, self-compassion, and self-regulation. Groups are limited to 4-6 students within the same grade and typically last six-eight weeks.
Individual Student Meetings: I provide individual student counseling as needed. Students have the ability to request to meet with me if they would like to talk about something individually. Individual meetings with students are generally the result of a student, parent, teacher, or administrator referral. Individual meetings are brief, solution-focused, and are not ongoing services.
Parent and Community Engagement: An integral part of student success and growth is the partnerships we form with families and community stakeholders. I support activities, programs, and support that encourage school-family engagement. Parents, I encourage you to contact me via email (montana.hatlen@bvsd.org), phone (720-561-3528), or in person when you have concerns about your child or simply wish to partner with me. Please be aware that it may take up to 24 hours for me to respond to emails and/or phone calls.
