Syllabus:
8th grade health is a one quarter class.
The list below are of the Units along with Lessons/Topics that are covered in 8th Grade Health. The topics are shown in the general order they are covered during the class:
Emotional & Mental Health (being emotionally healthy, dealing with troublesome feelings, reducing & managing stress, social media & emotional health, making healthy decisions)
Nutrition & Physical Activity (eating healthy at fast food restaurants, resisting pressure to eat less healthy foods, body image basics, dieting dangers & healthy ways to manage weight, eating disorders)
Tobacco, Alcohol, and other Drugs (what is the truth about medicines, opioids, tobacco, alcohol, marijuana & vaping, influences on ones choices about drugs, family, school & community rules about drugs)
Violence & Injury Prevention (making safe decisions, understanding violence, understanding sexual abuse)
HIV, STI, and Pregnancy Prevention (consent, STI & HIV facts, making sexual health decisions, resisting sexual pressure, using condoms for safer sex, negotiating condom use, preventing pregnancy)
Abstinence, Puberty, & Personal Health (staying healthy for a lifetime, protecting body from disease, feelings & relationships, influences of abstinence)

Guest speakers:
SPAN: Some time during the quarter, we will have a guest speaker from SPAN talk to our 7th & 8th graders during the entire week. Here is a link to explain what SPAN will talk about and information for opting out your student(s). SPAN letter of information and opt-out form
Piercing/Tattoos: Sometime during the semester we have an amazing guest speaker from the Boulder County Health Dept. come talk to your students about piercings and tattoos.
