What is mini-society? Mini-Society is an an economic education program developed by Dr. Marilyn Kourilsky, a professor at UCLA. We also use the research written in The Classroom Mini-Economy, by Harlan Day, Ph.D (link provided below).
How does a mini-society work? Each class will create a form a currency that will be used through the year to encourage and motivate positive behavior. Students will have the opportunity to earn "money" by completing their classroom jobs, random acts of kindness and exceptional quality of work. Students are responsible for saving their "money" to spend at our class auction and class market. Class markets/auctions are typically held every 4-5 weeks. At the class market and auction student sell and buy items they have created/designed. We will send out more information about class market/auction as the school year progresses.
Why do a mini-society? Mini-Society creates an environment where students can experience economic concepts, use design thinking and creativity to market their products and authentically participate in a student-led classroom market.
