Instructional design is the creation of instructional materials. After the instructional material is created it is then developed and eventually tested. Examples, of instructional materials range from: manuals, videos, online games, and websites.
Analysis: The most important phase in the ADDIE model is "Analysis". In this phase is where a problem is identified. In addition, "training needs is analyzed, the target audience identified, and the high-level learning goals are listed"(Vulpen).
Design: In the "design" phase of the ADDIE model clear objectives are created. These objectives need to be measurable. Also, learning activities are described. In addition, an effective storyboard is created that demonstrates a clear visual representation of the instructional material.
Development: The development phase can be divided into the four main components which are: developing a prototype, creating the course, ensuring quality, and performing a test run. According to the authors from Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology "development includes preparing student and instructional materials (both print and electronic) as specified during design" (Dempsey & Reiser, 2018, p.24).
Implementation: The implementation phase is very important since in this phase the instructional material that was created in the design phase is finally implemented.
Evaluation: In the evaluation phase the results of the instructional material are highlighted. In addition, evaluation includes both formative and summative evaluation. Dempsey & Reiser (2018) highlighted "formative evaluation involves collecting data to identify needed revisions to the instruction, while summative evaluation involves collecting data to assess the overall effectiveness and worth of the instruction" (Dempsey & Reiser, 2018, p.24).
The similarities between the two models are the following: in both models clear objectives must be created. Also, for both models an instructional material has to be created for the learners. In addition, for both models the end goal is to determine if the learners were able to meet the main objective.
The differences between the two models are the following: in the ADDIE model there are 5 steps where as in Gagne's model there are 9 steps. The focus of ADDIE is creating an instructional material, whereas the focus of Gagne's is on the delivery of instructional content.
Artifacts
This model has 10 components. A lot of the steps in the "Dick and Carey Model" are very similar to the steps in the ADDIE model. For example, both models contain the analysis phase and the design phase. This model can be used in classrooms and also could be used for businesses. The primarily goal of this model is that once the learner completes the instruction they would be able to perform a task.
Project: Utilizing the Dick and Carey model
"Google classroom training"
Teachers will be able to utilize Google Classroom to supplement student learning.
Performance objectives:
1.) Given the instructions to access the three modules, learners will be able to access the modules.
2.) Given written instructions on the google slides learners will be able to successfully watch the video.
3.) Learners will be able to successfully answer the 4 questions after they have watched the video at a success rate of 75 percent.
In this course ETEC 5440 I have learned how to use the ADDIE model in order to create an instructional material. I created two quizizz math games. The purpose of these games was to prepare the students to take the i-ready math diagnostic test in December. The knowledge and skills that I learned in this class can definitely be applied to my job. In other words, I will share these review games with the math department; so that they can also use these games to prepare the students to take the i-ready test in December. Since these review games worked out good for me I am sure that they will also work well with the students from the other math teachers at my school site.
