All students will be starting the new school year off learning or reviewing new classroom procedures and expectations.
Kindergarten will focus on modeling and learning through stories what it looks like to be kind, safe, responsible, and respectful. They will also be learning how to take good care of books as well as become familiar with some of the book's parts.
First Grade will begin with reviewing book care etiquette. They will then learn about ABC order and how books are arranged in the easy section of the library as well as how to pick a just right book using the "I PICK"strategy. Main and supporting characters and their traits will also be a topic of focus.
Second Grade will learn how to locate a book by its call number and choose one that is "Just Right" by conducting the five finger rule. They will also be instructed on how to search for a book of interest using Destiny Discover and be able to differentiate between fiction and nonfiction text.
Third Grade will review how to use Destiny Discover to locate a book of interest. They will also focus their learning on gaining a better understanding of the importance of nonfiction text features and genres.
Grades 1st - 3rd may also get the opportunity to explore the subscription database, BookFlix, which is a resource in POWER Library. In BookFlix students can watch videos and read books about Animals and Nature, Earth and Sky, People and Places, ABC’s and 1, 2, 3’s, Family and Community, Music and Rhyme, Adventure, and more. They can also enjoy read alouds with words highlighting and interactive games. Some films and books are even available in Spanish too!
The semester will start with the review of classroom procedures and expectations, then move onto a review of the library catalog. From there the students will be in full research mode, learning about the process of research.
Fourth Grade will become familiar with keyword searching, search strategies (especially skimming and scanning), hyperlinks, URLs, SERP, Web Search Tools (Search Engines and Subject Directories), and website evaluation by authority and purpose.
Fifth Grade will focus their attention on the FSE model (Focus, Strategize, and Evaluate). They will be creating a focus using open and closed questioning, experimenting with keywords and search operators, exploring unfamiliar web search tools (Search Engines, Subject Directories, and Subscription Databases through POWER Library), evaluating websites using checklists, and becoming more familiar with plagiarism and citations.
