Social and Emotional Support

In addition to many positive team building experiences, all of the classrooms participate in a Social Emotional Learning Program called Second Step. This program provides a continuum of weekly lessons on themes such as empathy, emotion management, friendship skills and problem solving. By working through these topics as a school, we can impact change on a grander scale and have common conversations across the classrooms and on the yard. Zones of Regulation

Franklin also helps students to learn to manage their emotions using the Zones of Regulation. This is a behavioral intervention system that helps students to identify their feelings, and to use techniques and tools to regulate their emotions so that they can be as successful as possible in every situation. Bullying and Harassment

Harassment and targeted bullying are unacceptable behaviors at Franklin, and will be treated seriously. Please familiarize yourself with BSD Board policy concerning bullying. LINK

We have three pillars in our approach to preventing and dealing with bullying. The first is a focus on creating a positive school climate at Franklin. Research has shown that this is the most effective way to prevent bullying. The second pillar is a strong emphasis on Social and Emotional Learning, which is also a research-backed method of reducing incidents of harassment within the school setting. Finally, our third pillar is immediate intervention, taking a team-based approach with targeted, restorative, and supportive solutions.

To be successful in creating an environment where bullying can be eradicated, communication between home and school is crucial. Please reach out to your student's teacher with any concerns that your child shares with you. COUNSELING SERVICES

Our counselors provide school based counseling services for students facing social and emotional challenges that disrupt their daily functioning in the areas of academic performance, attendance, and behavioral concerns at school. Counselors provide students with short-term individual and group counseling in a safe, non-judgmental, supportive, and confidential environment. Student can learn the skills in order to be successful socially and emotionally in their environment.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

Our School Psychologists provide comprehensive psycho-educational and mental health assessments for students attending BSD schools, as well as Burlingame residents that are enrolled in private schools and Non-public schools.

Services Provided:

Lead and collaborate with IEP teams
Supervise School Psychologist Interns
·Aide in development of district programs
Collaborate and consult with parents/families/students, co-workers, and Non-Public agencies/schools

STOPit

We are pleased to announce that our school district has enrolled with STOPit, by STOPit Solutions.

STOPit is an online reporting tool designed to deter and mitigate bullying, cyber abuse, and other inappropriate behaviors, consisting of an app and a back-end incident management system for school administrators.

Our 4th and 5th grade students will have access to the STOPit mobile app, which has two simple but powerful features.

Specifically, the program educates students to:

· Recognize the signs of at-risk behaviors

· Take every sign and signal seriously

· Report it anonymously through STOPit App/Web or 24/7 Incident Response Center

· Submit photo or video evidence (App/Web Only)

· Alert designated administrators to issues and risks early, before they escalate

No personal information is needed to use STOPit. The only way personally identifiable information will be accessible through STOPit is if a requester voluntarily includes it within the content of a request or message.

Both our school and STOPit are committed to protecting the privacy of student data. STOPit is a signatory to the Student Privacy Pledge, spearheaded by the Future of Privacy Forum and the Software & Information Industry Association. Students have the power to help put an end to harmful and inappropriate behavior they see online through social media and other means. They can use STOPit to reach out for help if they or a peer are facing a personal crisis or experiencing bullying, abuse, or are otherwise in need of assistance. Our goal with STOPit is to create safer, kinder, school communities both online and off.

Please note that we will be launching STOPit on October 7th. If this is something that you would like your child to have access to please help your child to download the STOPit app from the app store on his or her smartphone or tablet at no charge. You will need to search for Franklin using the app directory. You can privately ask for help for your student, family, others you care about, or even acquaintances who appear to need help.
