Don't make it personal- whatever students is saying is not personal although it may be directed at you.
Ignore what you can- Don't sweat the small stuff.
Stay Calm. Watch your tone and volume.
Give students an area to go to calm. Give them space.
Respond with humor. This can sometimes derail student behavior.
Talk with the student in private. Remember to watch for signs that are ready to listen. Offer help and/or resources.
Complete a student contract that includes reward system based on student interests.
Start class off with greeting. Make students feel welcome and safe.
Come up with nonverbal signal to let student know they are doing well. This is also a for of positive reinforcement.
Reward students for doing well. This can be having lunch with them, a token system, extra recess, free time, etc...
Leave a student a positive note on their desk. Establish a relationship. This can be hard but it is important to try and do.
Call the behavior intervention specialist for help. Teamwork is important and essential!
Document behaviors...ABC or frequency data can help give insight to behavior.
