Stay Calm! If you panic the situation will get worse.
Call for help. Know who is trained in your area/hallway for Handle with Care. Don't be afraid to ask or get help.
If student is known to elope make sure to place him/her further from door. Place furniture in classroom in manner to help block way to door.
Handle with Care is our district Behavior Management system. It includes physical blocking techniques. It also includes holds that can be done if student is at point that they are an imminent threat or a danger to self or others.
Remember to always keep ABC documentation!!! Ask behavior specialist for a form that works for you.
have an area student can go to calm and give them space.
Do not argue with student. The time to talk about situation or what happened is when they are calm.
remove the audience. If student can and will walk with you out of class then that is great. if student is becoming aggressive and refuses to leave then remove other students.
Be assertive and directive without being aggressive. Keep statements short and understandable.
Call Behavior Intervention Specialist and ask for help. Teamwork is necessary.
Watch for signs of student being upset and intervene early.
Establish a relationship with student, This is sometimes hard but necessary. Let them know they are safe with you.
