Math Awareness Celebration 2021

As we just finished a challenging first semester, the stress and uncertainty have been brewing into the minds of our fellow Mathizens, the doubts on whether they have chosen the right course and path in life. As we begin the second semester, the Mathematics Society prepared a series of activities to promote Mathematics Awareness Week 2021, but it was renamed Mathematics Awareness Celebration 2021. The MathSoc created a Facebook frame on April 13, 2021, and Mathizens were encouraged to use the Facebook frame to promote the celebration.

In recognition of their life's most significant accomplishments of the great mathematicians, the Mathematics Society has prepared a game entitled "Guess the Mathematician" as the first part of the celebration. The students were given a chance to guess a mathematician described in the post on the MathSoc page on Facebook. The game started from April 19, 2021, to April 23, 2021, and the winners were announced on April 24, 2021, during the "Kumustahang MathSoc".

As we continue on our celebration, an event entitled "COCOA – Career Opportunities and course Occupation Awareness "has been conducted to enlighten students. The program was posted on Facebook from April 20, 2021, up to April 29, 2021. The activity was intended for all BS Mathematics students, especially the freshmen, to inform them of the possible career opportunities waiting for them.

To further reduce and blow away their doubts about choosing the right course, the organization organized an event entitled "Kumustahang MathSoc" in coordination with the Alumni and Faculty of the College of Science. The program was held on April 24, 2021, through Google Meet and Facebook Live, where the students get to know the alumni's experiences during their college days and the challenges they encountered along the way. The event consisted of Kumustahang MathSoc for Applied Statistics, Kumustahang MathSoc for Business Application, and Kumustahang MathSoc for Computer Science. Each part of the event was begun with a Doxology prepared by the BulSU Saring Himig and followed by singing the national anthem and the BulSU hymn. Also, each part has assigned professionals to provide opening and closing remarks. Additionally, to make it more enjoyable, there are raffles and intermission numbers in the middle of the event and a homecoming for all Alumni at the end of the program.

The first part of the Kumustahang MathSoc was for the BS Mathematics with specialization in Applied Statistics from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The talented masters of the ceremonies were two of the Mathsoc officers; they are Norie Lyn M. Dela Cruz and Keith Eigns M. Sayo. Dr. Thelma V. Pagtalunan, Dean College of science, and Ms. Ma Theresa F. Reyes gave the opening remark and closing remark, respectively. The intermission number was prepared by Ms. Katrina Remurozo - AS Alumni batch 2018. For the event proper, our guest speakers were Robin Victoria, Francis Galvan, and Rustom Mateo.

The second part of the kumustahan was intended for the BS Mathematics with specialization in Business Application from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The brilliant masters of the ceremonies were also from the MathSoc officers; they are Adrian R. Bernardino and Jet T. Mateo. Like in the previous part, there is an opening remark by Mr. Benedict M. Estrella, Department Head of the Mathematics department, and a closing remark by Mrs. Lyca D.C Marcelino, the alumni coordinator. The intermission number was set by Mr. Cristian Paolo Aguinaldo, BA Alumni batch 2017. The guest alumni that time were Eddie Tamayo Dela Cruz, Kristine Diane Garcia, and Rolyn Domagoso Vergara.

The last part of the kumustahan was for the BS Math with a specialization in Computer Science from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. The talented masters of the ceremonies were Reynan G. Robles, the President of the Mathematics Society, and John Lenard A. Fernandez, the External committee head of the Mathematics Society. The opening and closing remarks were delivered by Ma'am Deo Stephanie Angeles, the program chair of the Mathematics Department and Ma'am Irish T. Baldevarona, College Secretary of the College of Science, respectively. Additionally, Ms. Aubrey Rose Gan and Mr. Marco C. Mandap, CS Alumni batch 2016, sang for the intermission number. The guest speakers were James Carlo Jualo, Dave Louie Roxas, and Rovvie Resurreccion.

For the last activity of our Mathematics Awareness Celebration 2021, an online math quiz bee was conducted from 1:00 to 5:30 pm on April 30, 2021, for all BS Mathematics students via Zoom and Facebook live. The talented masters of the ceremonies were Daryl Azura and Patrick Josh Atayde. The quiz masters of the event are the respectable professors: Ma'am Lyca DC. Marcelino and Sir Arcel F. Galvez. The quiz bee was divided into three rounds: Easy, Average, and Difficult. The participants were also divided into two divisions. The first division consisted of freshman and sophomore students, and the second division was the third-year and fourth-year students. After the tough competition on the easy and average around, an intermission was prepared by the CS Band. Short messages were also given by the judges Prof. Yolanda C. Roberto, Mr. Harris R. Dela Cruz, Mrs. Valentine Blez L. Lampayan, and Dr. Paulino P. Malang. The announcement of qualifiers for the difficult round was followed immediately. The difficult round of the quiz bee was intense; each participant gave their best to win the completion. To formally end the program and the celebration of the Mathematics Awareness Celebration 2021, Mrs Irish T. Baldevarona, College secretary of the college of science, gave closing remarks.
