Cash for Trash -
A Recycling Initiative
RECYCLING MADE EASY!
Environmental sustainability has been an important cause to me for many years now especially with the effects of climate change becoming more apparent. Did you know that Malaysia is currently the 2nd highest country in Asia for Plastic Waste Generation? Our landfills are reaching maximum capacity. Our trash has nowhere else to go.
Since my tenure as state assemblyman began in 2013, I have launched multiple initiatives encouraging recycling to reduce waste. The Waste Separation and Recycling campaign is my latest initiative to further ease the recycling process for the residents of Bukit Gasing.
All Bukit Gasing households will be given 5 white/clear plastic bags each to throw recyclable items. If you’re confused about which waste items can be recycled, follow this link for an extensive list! Environmental literacy is the first step towards combating climate change.
Once your white/clear plastic bags are filled up with recyclable items, place them next to your typical black or blue garbage bags of non-recyclable waste to be picked up by MBPJ’s regular contractor three times a week, just like they do now. Bukit Gasing is the first and only constituency to strike up a formal agreement with KDEB Waste Management to collect bags of recycled items, making saving the environment a convenience. Watch a how-to here!
Besides that, we will pay you to recycle! Through our ‘Cash for Trash’ scheme, we will collect your bags of recyclables every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 10am till noon, opposite Lek Seng Kopitiam, Seksyen 19, Petaling Jaya. You will be paid according to market rates and this initiative is open to everyone, regardless of constituency or nationality. So far we have been receiving an outstanding response with around 200 kg of waste collected every week! (The Star, Oct 2022)
I hope through my initiatives to make recycling easy and even profitable, more residents will be motivated to join my journey towards a #ZeroWasteMalaysia. For more information about these initiatives, tune in to my podcast with BFM through this link!
