This is an unprecidented time and we are all learning as we go. The following are some tips that will keep you and your family healthy and (hopefully) happy.
Keep a daily routine. We are creatures of habit and are happier with a routine. Stick to a wake up time and a bed time, and help your kids do the same. Try to eat meals at the same time each day. Get dressed, even if you don't leave the house.
Be productive. Use the extra time at home to clean, organize or start a new project. Teach your child how to bake your favorite dessert or sew on a sewing machine. Have the kids go through old clothes to donate once everything is open again.
Set aside time for education. While the teachers are adjusting to teaching online, so is your student. Help them set a routine and stick to it.
Exercise. Try that new workout video on YouTube. Dust off the old yoga DVD. Make a TikTok video with the kids. Anything that gets you moving each and every day.
Embrace the space. Space from others, space from the need to go places, space from the social pressures, space from the media. Just like after 9/11, there is a lot of difficult news in the media, news that is hard for children to process. Limiting the news so that you can discuss it with them can help soothe the anxieties of the unknown.
Connect with your loved ones. Play a board game, write a letter, call a parent, be a source of emotional support for others.
Be the calm. Children pick up on our emotional cues and learn how to process times of stress by watching us. While they may not remember much from this time, they will remember how you reacted and how they felt.
This is a new experience for all of us. Taking care of our emotional well-being is just as important as our physical well-being.
